The damage started early with a big scrap at the front and similar wars down the field including a big nutting by Cheyenne Knowles (164) on Colin Dicken (145) which left Sonic wedged in the fence for the remainder of the race while a moving chicane bundled down from the pit bend before Phil Hudson (737) was folded for a first red. Lee West (6) took the front on the restart but soon found Dave Tuffen (117) and John Randall (707) nibbling the back end, Tuffen hitting the front for a little while. Some good jacking went on through this segment with Andy Davies (147) giving Vince Wolf (8) some on turn three, brother Shane (158) likewise on Carl Overy (617) while Dave Palmer (53) was stuffed first by Steve Ovett (207) before collecting a host of the oncoming traffic before Tuffen's now blazing wreck brought the reds out again, this time for an order restart. With only 12 survivers left, Mark Holdsworth (66) made the early running with Pete Winter (811) breathing down his neck. Little had been heard of defending champ Pete Lewis (35), but he was counted out finally as one hit too many killed his car on the pit bend, Randall doing the dirty deed. Buckley was now in contention and managed to pass to the lead, his only remaining job to avoid the attempted wrecking by Darren Herbert (236) and Randall, which he did easily. Holdsworth followed closely second with former champions Dave Vincent (22) and Sonny Sherwood (348) third and fourth. Herbert was later dropped from ninth for a wrong way attack.
