Old faces at Skeefy Orange Car meeting
Following the devastating news about the
cancellation of domestic PRI bangers this season (see
below), I was tipped off by a certain official that a
number of notable PRI banger racers of years gone by are
planning to descend on Arena Essex for the annual Terry
Skeef Memorial meeting.
Although team racing is strictly
outlawed under the rookie formula rules, names going back
to teams such as the Squad, the Condoms and the Canvey
Cowboys were mentioned. No drivers list has been published
for the meeting, which is due to take place on September
28th.
The "Orange Car" format for this meeting
dates back to Terry Skeef's membership of the Orange Squash
team, and the meeting was originally based on an all red
car meeting that finished off the Non-Ford Banger season.
The meeting traditionally features racing for 1600cc
Bangers, this year supplied in the rookie form, and for
Group A Hot Rods, a formula that Terry had started to race
in shortly before his death.
PRI Bangers no more?
Tony Woodroffe, in an
unprecendented move this week, has issued a statement
to all drivers summarily killing off all normal
domestic PRI banger meetings this season with the
exception of the PRI Banger World Final.
This follows events at the Brian
Orgles Memorial meeting on Sunday, August 10. In his
statement, the President of the promotion states that
"all normal domestic Banger meetings have now been
dropped and replaced with either Rookie Bangers or an
existing PRI Formula".
He goes on to say; "It is with
great reluctance that we have had to take these steps
but we feel we have no choice in the matter but to
make this decision following the events of the 10th
August". The events to which this refers occurred in
the pits following a race in which a number of team
factions clashed, the police having to be called in
to break up the disturbance.
The result means that a number of
meetings with long histories at the circuit,
including the Terry Skeef Memorial, the Olly Moran
Memorial and the end of season Grand Slam will be
changed to Rookie Banger meetings, though the Bank
Holiday Monday Big Van meeting, the World
Championship and the Firecracker will run as
originally advertised.
The statement ends; "A provisional
fixture list for 2009 had already been in place, with
the Bangers only racing every other week rather than
weekly which has been the case ever since we opened
in 1978, but in the current economic climate we felt
we had to reduce the Banger meetings to about 20 a
year. However a decision regarding next season will
now be made later in the year".
