Plastengrave Bangers incl. Ladies Banger
Championship Qualifier 5
Group A Hot Rods |
Next meeting | Last meeting |
Fifty laps was a task for the Group A's, the previous marathon distance being forty laps, and quite a few cars did not see the end of those laps, but the race provided new insight and plenty of thrills starting on lap one with a pole scrap between Griffiths and Witherall. Griffiths finally won that bout and ran away in the lead until Lee Ayton briefly took over, then spun, leaving Mills in front with only a quarter of the race gone. Wayne Shackleford mounted an attempt on Mills but never got better than second spot while Rouse started his attack and managed to get to second spot then, with the finish in sight, Rouse tried for the lead only to damage his steering. Mills got the trophy and set the record for the race at 15' 18" with Shackleford in second, while Rouse grimly kept going with only three wheels rolling to get third spot. Wes Graves took the helter-skelter race at the end ahead of Christie, while Terry Bearman got the better of Rouse in a three abreast move one lap out.
Ladies Bangers
Arena Essex, August 6, and the last Ladies Banger Qualifier
went the way of a masterful drive by Tracey Worthington who
took victims out from the start, starting with Phylis
Williams, carving through the field to finally punt Nicky
Barham and Kelly Wilson wide to grab the lead from where she
would never be shifted. Wilson would hang on for second from
Barham with Tina Roberts following.
Plastengrave Bangers
The Plastengrave Bangers started the August 6 meeting at
Arena Essex in fairly roddy style with a win for Joe Warner
with a gritty performance by Paul Dolman who, having been
second up to the last lap, found his car dying but kept it
going just long enough to grab fifth spot and a place in the
final. Lee Caunter was elevated to second as a result with
Mark Ruskin following. The second heat was a bit heavier,
especially with Buxton regular Graham Heywood giving out
plenty to the passers by including being involved in a three
car shunt with Steve Shaw and Mark Rowland on the home
straight. Eleven cars survived that race led home by Neil
Cornish, racing on a day license, while Denis Webb was just
pipped by RJK points leader Sonny Sherwood for second at the
end. More scrapping followed in heat three, though the early
shunt for Jason McMahon by Andrew Gough only served to give
McMahon incentive to drive faster, which he did. McMahon won
the race despite a last lap attempt to shunt him out by Mark
Newman who had to content himself with second spot while
George Rowbotham was left to clear away his folded car which
had been nutted heavily by John Price by the pit gate. Roy
Laybourn shifted back to the full contact formula to pick up
a win in the consolation ahead of Geoff Hughes, both avoiding
a last minute lunge by Glen Buxton for their places with
Jason Jackson following behind while Paul Hawkes was seen to
by a head on by Gough before Mark Deacon steamed him from
behind full bore.
Lee Morris decided to start his hitting early in the final, driving into Dolman on the start while Cornish had a go at Heywood, dumping him into Morris. Laybourn had the early lead but had only the hope of pulling a big lead out which he tried but with some of the mayhem going off, it would not be enough. Sherwood, with a knack of getting through pile ups easily, would catch up close to the end and eventually pass him, with Stuart Ruff hanging on as well, giving Sherwood another win from Ruff and Laybourn while the rest of the field went crazy including a massive jacking for Heywood from Webb by the Tavern, but only after Heywood had seen off a few himself including Clive Killick. Jamie Wilders for once took first place in the Rawlins qualifier which was interrupted when Dan Reid took Mark O'Neill head on, O'Neill needing some attention. Steve Macklin was responsible for much of the wrecks as he took on Del Waterman and eventually killed himself off in a head on with Tom Harding, Ruskin benefitting from the double death as the last car running after eliminating Wilders.
