Tributes were paid to John Jenkin, a long serving scrutineer and marshall with Promotasport at Crayford and Rayleigh amongst other circuits, and more recently at Mildenhall for RDC, who died this week.

1300 Stock Cars
Darren Cardy picked the July 30 meeting at Arena Essex to move to his new chosen formula of 1300 Stock Cars, and immediately showed the other drivers that Simon Welton was not the only example of the talent rising from the Ministox as he able shot ahead to win the warm up race in his shiny new Corsa stock with Spike Ellis and Derek Mortimer following. The main event saw business as usual however for Derry Monk who drover through the field to win while Ellis put in another good showing in second ahead of Andy Brown. Cardy then repeated his warm up win in the helter-skelter with Ellis second yet again while Mortimer ended up with a disqualification for taking Brown out in a big t-bone hit, Darren Plumb getting third spot having not been able to contain Ellis at the end.

Outlaw Hot Rods
The success of the new Outlaw formula is beginning to show at Arena Essex. The July 30 meeting saw a twenty-one car line up with varying models from the traditional PRI Hot Rod design right through to the VW Corrado designs now popping up regularly on National meetings. However it was regular Arena racer Paul Simmons who took the first race of the day with Dave Fry and Mark Lisowski hot on his tail, the three taking the top places after Alan White had dominated the early racing. The impressive Corrado of Des Stainer took the main event by half a lap over Lisowski and Simmons then Simmons and Lisowski grabbed the top two spots in the helter-skelter race, Stainer taken out for contact with Andy Johnson going in third.

PRI Banger Teams
It was showdown time for the remaining ten teams in the PRI Banger Team Championship on July 30 and with no Squad presence, it was anyones' guess as to who might get the two top spots. The Condoms pulled out a good first heat lead as team captain and veteran Steve Davies cruised home ahead of Darren Ahern racing for the first timers The Unamed, Swalley Buckley and son Andy Davies grabbing nine more points between them to give the pinkies a ten point lead over the Unamed and the preliminary winners the Rabbits, who grabbed seven including a third spot for Tony Wade. The Gladiators put in an appearance in the leader board in the second heat, Paul Russell just holding Wooster Smith from the Rabbits off for a win, though with the help of bunny captain Wayne Prayle, the preliminary round winners pulled twelve points in to push themselves up to a close second to the Condoms who could only muster five points. The Rabbits went on to dominate the consolation with a Colin Everett win from Billy King in the pink, the Rabbits taking a slight lead in the points in a race that saw the usual scrapping including a roll for Tommy McGurk of the Unnamed. The two top teams were beginning to pull away with only the Ant Hill Mob making anything like a close run of it. The deciding final started with a t-bone for Mobster Shane Collins from Smith of the Rabbits, however, a sign of how things were to go for them both while Cream team regular Phil Stevens seemed intent on wrecking himself, first by himself against the wall then from a big head on by Everett. Most of the qualifying Rabbits seemed to go wrecking, Kevin Prayle and Tony Wade the only ones to finish, and that was well down the order. However as one of only three teams that scored in the final, the Rabbits needed little more to secure the runner up berth to the head to head finals, while four of the scoring places went the way of the Condoms for the winners' berth, the only other scorers being the Unamed with Richie Ahern finishing first and Sonny Sherwood fifth leaving them in third spot and eight points behind the Rabbits.

Tony Wade went on to win the Rawlins Qualifier, a solo event as always, which saw Dave Greenstreet try his luck with the Rabbits until Wayne Prayle took care of him while Billy King blitzed Dan Reid on the home straight. Mark Ruskin finished second while Kevin Prayle took third and the last car running award.
