Lightning Rods
It was first time out for the Lightning Rods at Arena Essex on April 2 with the return of a few old faces and a number of new ones too with a few visitors making up the numbers. It was an old face, however, that won the opening White & Yellow grade race, Nick Langley going inside Shaun Coveney as the pair threaded their way through back markers to get home, Coveney hurdling the kerb at one point. Micky Rosenthal ran away with the second heat with Shaun Mayle following. The notable thing was that many of the big drivers such as Darren Ahern and Roy Rawlins, both title holders of old, spent much time dodging or getting caught in big overtaking moves that went wrong. Both were to figure in the third race as the yellow grade sat out and Ahern adopted his traditional outside line to buzz up to first spot as the race came to a premature halt, Coveney in second again. As the numbers went up, so did the action as everyone bundled on for the final race which was declared when an initial clash by Jamie Bugden and Chris Whiteman almost had Ahern and Langley before the whole of the second corner piled up. Mayle was well out of this by the time the reds came down and was awarded the win with Coveney yet again in second spot, the rest of the result a lapscorer's nightmare come true!

1300 Stock Cars
Dan Imber pushed out Michael Coventry in the first 1300 Stock Car race in the first qualifier for the Supreme Championship at Arena Essex on April 2 for a win in his maiden race, John McGirr holding third spot from Delbert and Derry Monk, then Simon Welton took the big race, outlasting Monk's five lap charge at the end and making up for his black flag in the first race. Monk was not to be denied some share of the winning though, easily stroking off Graeme Mackey in the last race with Anthony Oak dumping Imber out for third spot.

PRI Banger Teams
The PRI Banger Team Championship had long been a source of gossip and impatience among drivers and spectators who remembered the final in 1999 and the various stories that had flown about since then, so when April 2 arrived, few were disappointed. The return of the Condoms, the Vange Destroyers, the Ant Hill Mob and Cowboys as well as new teams such as the No Hopers, Buzz Boys and the Icelanders, plus the identity of the participating Suicide Squad only fueled the expectations of the crowds that turned up for one of the best team turnouts at Arena Essex in years.

At the Icebreaker earlier in the year, the Midnight Runners had surprised all by not only turning up with a hastily entered two man team, but also grabbing a heat win courtesy of former Plastengrave Non-Ford champion Mark Newman. The Runners turned up mob handed this time and came away with a first race lead as Frank Skinner jetted home while the first blows in the Cream/Condom/Rabbit vs. Squad war were already coming in, Tony Wade (ex-Condom, now Rabbit) helped Richie Ahern of the imaginatively named "Unamed" team squash the Squad's Ray Sharrod on the pit bend after Sharrod had done Ahern's team mate Wayne Rowland in the side. This was nothing compared with the carnage to come as the second heat saw Roy Bramley and John Harris come out for the Cream to take on Chris Whiteman and ex-Cream Sean Collin, seen by many as the source of the current squabble. However if anyone though Collin would roll over and play it down were soon to be shown otherwise as a massive boning for Bramley against the home straight armco started a pile up which then saw Harris jack Collin big time. While cars piled in on the home straight, few noticed the happenings on the back straight as Whiteman, unstrapped on the safety area, suddenly was hit by John McLennan. The immediate effect was that the red flags came out, and the steward announced a load up for the Rabbits. Mark Sprawling won the restart for the Gladiators, but the repercussions on McLennan's hit rumbled on as Rabbit captain Wayne Prayle approached steward Jim Lazarus. With unconfirmed reports of McLennan actually being shoved into the prone Whiteman car, the steward relented, giving loadups only to McLennan himself and to Prayle who accepted responsibility on behalf of the team. Heat three and Harris was back, but this time it was Frankie Holmes on for the Squad and with a traditional hard Mk.III Cortina to boot, which is where it ended up. Harris's boot squarely plugged by Frankie's front end, then Phil Stevens got into the act by repeating the move on Frankie! This did not stop Harris either; he unhooked himself from the crushed Stevens car and went after Stuart Adcock. Dave Lightbody also continued the hitting for the depleted Rabbits, starting on Allan Trickett of the Elite head on before Shane Davies of the Condoms finished the former World Champion before also going after Adcock. Jay Randall scored the first win for the Buzz Boyz, though Colin Lambert took second for the Runners who were now building a good lead up. The consolation was a little tame by comparison with much ending in a turn four pile up, Bryan Roberts leading the stragglers home, including a well beaten but still running Bramley in ninth and final spot.

With all the heats over, the Midnight Runners held a good lead but not a total one, their nearest rival the Dunno team needing eleven clear points difference to pass them and the Buzz Boys and the Gladiators only just behind them, both of last years' finalists plus playoff winners the Rabbits slipping out of contention. It seemed that the Runners would easily jet home to victory as Skinner again avoided the carnage to take up a comanding lead until Jay Randall came off the centre to head Skinner on and out of it, the remaining Runners also falling as Ahern took the lead as the reds came out and the race was declared. The race went to Ahern and the Unamed, but the meeting went to the other nameless team, the Dunno, Jay Wilders and Dan Reid putting third and seventh in to get the required points and more.

Frankie Holmes then demonstrated why you should not dither about hitting someone as he changed his mind at the last moment attacking Stu Brooks head on in the Rawlins qualifier, the reds coming out so that the St. John's folk could check on the Squaddie. The race was voided after the restart as the only car that might have got the win, Ahern, was disqualified as Richie was out of his belt, the only other runners being Jason Jackson who was ignored since all he could do was donuts, Danny Oliver and Elliott Dobson, who were given the last car running award to share as it was impossible to separate them at the end!
