BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
No mean turnout for the first Arena Essex appearance of the
new season of the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars, March 26. Stuart
Chalkley held off well from Roy Perry in the first race,
though the meeting itself really belonged to Mick Sworder who
ran away with the second heat, only Chris Roots able to
pursue, then the final, twice stopped with problems for the
first two from the first heat including a rollover for
Chalkley, Sworder leading Carl Issitt home as Roots spun out
on the pit bend four laps from home. Roots made up for it in
the Grand National Qualifier, though he left it until the
last possible moment to get past Andy Maynard who put up a
gutsy run from the half way point, holding Roots back despite
some heavy knocks until the last corner, while Sworder
managed to get to fourth from his one lap handicap.
National Bangers
With the restoration of the "white top" opening heat at
Arena Essex, it was unknown as to how many cars would
actually turn up to take on the field for the three
qualifying spots for the Rising Stars final on offer, but the
meeting on March 26 seemed to gather in enough cars to merit
shifting the heat up to supplant the stock car race scheduled
to start the meeting. Though Paul Hawkes sped away off the
front early on, by the time the race was stopped after one
too many wrecks in the turn four pile up brought the first
aid crews on, it was Chris Hussey that was declared the
winner, his first trophy ever. However the second race was
packed out with star graders, the biggest move courtesy of
Paul Whiteman off the start when he piled Waz Barber in from
four cars back, with attention also focused on Phil Hudson
who made an appearance in this meeting. Lee West continued
his successful run of wins with a trophy here ahead of Stuart
Wilson. The consolation, added in to make a qualifiers only
final for the day rather than the originally planned allcomer
affair, saw plenty of lead cars eventually falling before
Michael Smith was spun out by the eventual winner, Mark
Ruskin with Balders motoring up in third spot, dispensing
with Whiteman and Brian Taylor as he came across the line.
However it was double time again as West wiped out Roy
Laybourn then outlasted Hudson who spun himself out to
seventh and final finisher, allowing Shane Davies to grab
second spot. Ruskin made up for it by sticking in one of the
biggest hits of the day when he took both Mark Chilvers and
John Harding into Dean Kingsworth and Jason Jackson before
getting a straight pass black flag in the Rawlins Spinner's
Special. Ruskin also tried to stop Sonny Sherwood but failed
as Sherwood picked up the win ahead of Andy Burrough and
Richie Ahern, though Ruskin did get into the Rawlins final
courtesy of a last car award.
