Lightning Rods
The Lightning Rods returned to Arena Essex for the May 9 four race meeting, with Lee Page returning from his brush with danger in his previous outing with a win in the first heat, though he unexpectedly turned what might have been a comfortable win into a frantic race for the line as he spun out two laps from home, allowing second place Brian Whiteman to close right up with a realistic chance of stealing the race. Fred Moss held off a multitude of pass attempts by Colin Murray in the second heat while Mark Davidson did similar to Murray in the third heat, took his victory lap then promptly caught fire as he attempted to pull away to leave the track! However it was heat and final time again as Moss held off Rob Carr and, toward the end, Whiteman in a thrilling race.

Hot Rods
There were more Hot Rods at Arena Essex on May 9, with current points leader Dave Fry picking up the first race, holding off Andrew Armiger toward the end before controversy struck in the main event. It started when Armiger tried to hold his inside line on turn three, Gary Lyons on the outside decided to pull across to shut the line down but with Armiger already half way up Lyons, there was nothing for it but for the Lyons car to spin across Armigers' nose, causing the frantic avoidance tactics that followed to lead to a pile up on the turn four exit, Paul Simmons and Rick Fray among the unfortunate victims. Stu Hammond easily won from the restart while Armiger was left to scrap with Adam Scott over second place. Armiger went on to win the helter skelter after a good start and a number of outside passes, while Fry added to his points haul in second.

PRI Banger Teams

Suicide Squad win again as Rabbits return to make the yellow cars work for their points.

With a larger than expected field, the second PRI Banger Team round on May 9 at Arena Essex saw the meeting padded out with another heat. The extra heat, tacked on the start of the meeting, saw a promising start for the Nads, John Drummond picking up a win ahead of the only two Squad scorers of the day, Brian McGuiness and Russ McAngus. However in the first scheduled race we saw what would be the start of the rekindling of a banger war last seen a couple of years ago when the team makeup of the Suicide Squad was much different to what it currently is. The Rabbits had returned. What was worse was that Rabbit leader Wayne Prayle and cohort Kevin Prayle were up against new Squad member Stuart Adcock and ex-Rabbit Buster Woods. The result was a massive wrecking for all including a big t bone by Woods on Wayne Prayle while Kevin gave Woods a spanking, then nutted Cream member Sean Collin out of the race before a t bone attempt on Adcock took him out, but the effect was that the Squad scored nothing, leaving the race open to the other teams led by Elite member John Randall. The third heat of the day saw the same thing as Rabbit veterans John McLennan and Colin Everett set about Adcock, this time accompanied by Den Whiteman. Same tactics, same result as Paul Stern of the Ant Hill Mob, previous winners and beneficiaries of an earlier war of this type, came home first. The consolation saw the Rabbits pour what was left onto the track, including ex-Vermin cap Dave Ricketts, though much work was done by Paul Farr, previously with the Hurligans. Chris Whiteman, Woods, Farr and Prayle W. were all chucked off for getting too enthusiastic while Matt White picked up the second win of the day for the Nads who now led the meeting.

However the Rabbits had not reckoned on the two Squad that had escaped them in the first meeting, and McGuiness jetted through the field on the restart - Paul Russell managed a two point rollover on turn four - unscathed by Rabbit to win, the following McAngus and the inability of the Nads to summon any more than four points for Mark Mahoneys' seventh place finish summoning enough points to win the round outright, leaving the board after two rounds much as it was after one, though the lower places are a little clearer. Tony McDonald finished off his return to banger racing with a win in the Rawlins, John Harding picking up his second last car award inside a week.
