Ministox
The Ministox had a mixed day of it on their return to Arena Essex on May 16, with a few mishaps stirring the results up. David Burton was the first winner on the board, getting a good start on the rest of the field while Ray Harris managed to squeeze inside Mark Wilson on the last lap to clinch second. Harris, a promising driver of late and of previous seasons too was held up all day, grabbing second again in the second heat behind Anthony Lawrence while Burton was flagged off close to another victory for contact. However it was Lawrence Davey who pulled off the final victory, again from Harris and track champion Alistair Pizzey after an otherwise disappointing day, though maybe not as disappointing as Burton who collected another black flag for contact.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The turnout was fair at Arena Essex on May 16 as the BriSCA F2 Stock Cars turned up for the first leg of the Tarmac Masters series to be staged at the Purfleet oval, and perfect conditions meant that records were there to be broken. In the end, only Bill Battens' 20 lap record dropped away courtesy of visiting Dutch ace Willi Peters who won the Grand National qualifier, but the dominant driver of the day, Neal Smith, ran very close, equalling Rob Speaks' 25 lap record as he took the final on the day, one of two wins for the Harpendon based driver. Chris Stephens won the first heat, pulling well away from the action which was being provided by Simon McNab from the back up to second, then Neal Smith outran the field in similar style, this time leaving Chris Roots to tidy up after an ambitious shot from Gary Ellis early on collected a large number of star grade drivers. The result repeated itself in the third race, and this time Ellis was spun down the ranks by Roots, maybe for safety! Ellis returned undeterred in the final to beat Roots and McNab home, but well down on the winner. Peters inherited the lead in the Grand National Qualifier as Ellis' car gave up the ghost close to home, while Chris Roots' dad, ex-Superstox supremo Tony Roots, got his best result of the day in second ahead of a thrilling three way scrap between son Chris, McNab and John Plant, finishing in that order.

National Bangers
May 16 was a day for big hits at Arena Essex as the Banger Rising Stars series continued. The first 40 car start ended short with a fire, though only just, with Ian Ardley unable to catch Paul Stern for the first win, while another 39 turned out for the second heat which Don West took in fine style while Tommy McGurk, Jason Randall and Jason Mills exchanged hits around the circuit. West himself took a few on the way, including a helping whack for Neal Wells when he caught up on Dave Wilmott, and another smack for Lee Morris, though the best hit had to be McGurks' jacking of Paul Jackson on the first turn. The consolation had to be redded twice, the first after a monster shot on John Crone, first slung into a parked car, then hit the other way hard by Rob Chiddle. The second red saw Peter Tickner go into the armco backwards. This time the reds were final and Bob Dunn was awarded the race ahead of Neil Partridge. However this was as nothing compared to the hit that ended the final, which saw a full chat head on for Peter Kirby at the top of the home straight by Greig Cheeseman. Cheeseman was first loaded, then it was announced that he was not to return for the entire season. Cheeseman had been leading up until he was spun on the second corner and. seemingly believing that Kirby was the culprit, steamed the wrong way down the home straight, just avoiding several cars before hitting Kirby. Paul Eve took the declared win ahead of Spike Dray after penalties. For once, the hitting in the Rawlins 2000 qualifier was tame by comparison as Tony Abrehart got through as winner, then hit it out with Bob Dunn, Andy Spooner, Ashley Halliday and the eventual last car, Bradley Theaker.
