Ministox
Mayday Monday saw the Ministox turn out in large numbers at Arena Essex including quite a few visitors, though the field took a bit of a bashing through the day, mostly through accidental spins on either bend. It stopped the first heat twice, Alistair Pizzey being awarded the win after the second after Colin Cooper spun on the Aveley turn and was picked up sideways by the following field. Lee Smith had been leading to that point but was given a two place penalty for jumping the start, which put Ray Harris into second place, the start of another good day for him. The second heat went all the way, new bug David Burte getting the win easily while Tubbs Butler and Smith had a close race for second, Butler winning out. It was a return to form however in the final when Ryan Richards ate the kerb on turn two, the rest following in while Smith completed a miserable day with a black flag for hitting Vic Bilkey. Although Pizzey moved up well on the restart, he could not catch the Incarace pair Richard Grindrod and Craig Riches who finished behind final winner Harris.

1300 Stock Cars
It seems that Arena Essex has drawn a few drivers over to its fold in the 1300 Stock Cars as Elliott Wainwright showed up for the domestic meeting on May 3 declaring himself a full PRI licensed driver. He then went out on the track and dominated the meeting, dumping Lynda Beaumont back to third after a big tussle with Rob Harman for the first heat, then easily outpaced track champion Derry Monk and former Supreme champion Steve Davies in the main event. Beaumont had made a good showing in each of her outings that day and with Wainwright on a one lap handicap in the helter-skelter, she easily won ahead of a whole host of shunts that left John McGirr in second ahead of Monk.

Ladies Bangers
The second Ladies Banger showdown on May 3 at Arena Essex saw an overwhelming victory for Nina Crouchman as she lapped the whole field, spinning most of them as she went. These events do seem to get heavier as they run on, not least when Wendy Harding gets involved. This time around, second place Maria Ilett started things off by dumping Elaine Witherington into Trina Wade, then a clout from Harding sent the unfortunate onto two wheels down the home straight. Only eleven cars survived the thirty car start.

National Bangers

Phil Hudson extends his drivers' championship lead at Arena Essex with another final win in the Plastengrave Non-Ford meeting on May 3 as the pits overflow with cars for the popular series.

Howard Martin made a name for himself in the first Plastengrave Banger heat in 1999 by getting a heat and final double, and he did it again in the second at Arena Essex on May 3, though not by winning. This time his became the first of the days' rollovers, Martin going over 2 points on the back straight infield just before the reds came out for Gary Doyle who was in trouble on turn one. The restart was all about Dave Greenstreet who has become a talking point of late as the victim of a big jacking by Mark Ruskin in the team heat a few weeks before. By the time Pete Tickner rolled four points on te pit bend, Greenstreet had third, from there the lead was a simple matter as the previous front runners died away, though Chris Whiteman was flipped down a place by Garry Deacon on the line, not to return. Current Non-Ford champion Mark Newman chose this meeting to pick up his first win of the 1999 series, though he left it very late, coming up on Kevin Elmore and Kerry Goldstone within the last three laps and running inside both to lead through the last lap. Honourable mention has to be made to George Rowbotham who started the crumpling of Dan Reid's car with a massive t-bone, and also to Phill Morrison who took the field three times in a Menace livery VW Beetle! With the day going upside down, it was but a matter of time before Retard Roy Bramley got in on the act, missing out on the pile up on turn one in the late-comers heat only to roll on his roof on the pit bend. With all sorted, Roy decided to go for it, a nutting for Jason Scorah being a highlight while the Davey Cox car, previously victorious in the Ladies race for Nina Crouchman, was being destroyed by all on the Raceway Tavern turn. A loose wheel stopped the race a couple of laps early, Ian Smith getting the win, Roy Bramley loaded up again! Bradley Hampton took the forty car consolation which again turned into a succession of pile ups, leaving nine cars free.

The final was easily Greenstreet's until he spun himself on turn two a couple of laps from home, leaving Phil Hudson an easy route home to more points for his haul this season with Martin making up for his earlier booboo with second place, though the biggest talking point of this race was a sandwich attack by Terry Barton and Sean Collin on John Drummond on the home straight, Barton later also taking one on the nose from Collin with some help from Dave Truman, who finished his race in a hilarious nut fest with Ken Knight by the pit gate. It was then left to the Rawlins 2000 qualifier to produce the biggest field of the day; 57 cars. With the back end slow to start, the hitting and piling started quickly as turns two, three and four soon became battlefields, turn four blocking up. John Harding eventually finished what was left of the Balders car sideways on, Mark Deacon jacking Neil Freeman into Del Cove leaving Luke Radley, Brad Theaker and George Rowbotham with Harding. Rowbo had spent much time trying to get some momentum up with a damaged rear end limiting his movement but finally got going in reverse. His problem then was agility; unable to avoid it, Rowbo was piled into Theaker by Radley, leaving him and Harding before Anthony Ciantar's wreck caught. Harding's car went up in sympathy, and the race was declared a last car event, drawn between Radley and Harding!
