National Bangers Grand Slam
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars Ministox |
|
| In Brief |
Arena Essex was drenched for the second meeting in succession on Sunday, October 20, which made for difficult conditions for all three formulas racing that day.
|
Drivers' champion, Colin Thorndyke |
Surprisingly it kept the Ministox out of trouble, given the crashes of recent meetings, though it didn't stop some of the finishes getting pretty close, Rikki Taylor winning out in the final after a close race with the eventual second place driver Luke Hadlow. Travis Cope managed a win in the first race as the meeting was reverted at the last minute to the "Novice/Expert/Chase" format which has been used for much of the season. Daniel Moulton can only count himself lucky in the Expert race as he didn't so much win as others lost, including Nathan Olden who seemed to have the race sewn up until his car shuddered to a halt, belching smoke and seemingly out of it for the day, then Sam Hayfield took the roadway bend a little too fast given the conditions and hit the wall, leaving Moulton in front with only a few laps to go, Dan Rosenthal grabbing the same opportunity to get second with the wallhugger consoled with third place. Steve Laybourn took the Chase heat, though he was pursued all the way by Daniel Rolfe, Rosenthal and others following a dicey move by Laybourn to grab the lead, namely squeezing through inside on the pit bend with seemingly no room to spare. All this action, however, had little effect on the overall Drivers' Championship, however, with Colin Thorndyke graduating from the formula with honours, though now he is in need of a buyer for the dayglo orange monster! |
|
The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars probably suffered the most on the day, with many of the cars spinning right through the meeting, even the experts suffering, for example Mick Sworder had to make up some distance after a mistake in the rain on the start of the second heat, though he managed third in that race to add to all his other points on the day to secure his Drivers' Championship title for the circuit this year, though Dave Harley was probably the biggest winner that day with a heat and final double in the wet, Shaun Login grabbing the other race. |

A parting shot for John Harris from Matt Fuller |
The Bangers' Grand Slam meeting may not be the big event it once was, but it still provides plenty of action and, despite the weather, it proved an all round crowd pleaser (at least what crowd braved the rain). Waz Barber put in the first win, becoming the 2002 Champion of Champions as he outpaced Andrew Davies to the line, though Davies would go on to win nearly everything else, including a hard fought Rawlins 2000 final which again saw the continuing team battle which would provide some of the best wrecking action of the day, especially with new blood for the Creams in the form of Dan Reid (formerly of the defeated team finalists, the Allsorts) and Grieg Cheeseman (an ex-IzIt and 1300 Stock Car driver). It was the Runners who came out on top, however, with a last awesome shot by Matt Fuller on the remains of the John Harris car earning the Plastengrave champion the best wrecker award, while Tubbs Butler outlasted everyone for the last car award, Davies winning the first past the post thing. |
