National Bangers Olly Moran Memorial
Outlaw Hot Rods Miller Motorsport World Series - Final round Ministox |
|
| In Brief |
The last round of the Miller Motorsport Outlaw Hot Rod series, which took place at Arena Essex on September 29, proved a spectacular show in three races that saw Robin Pickett confirm the title win, although he failed to win on the day, pressing Stu Hammond hard in the second heat followed by a similar feat against Perry Clack in the meeting final but failing to beat either. Those two places, plus a few points for the first heat seventh spot kept Pickett well ahead, though the final win gave Clack the second spot, while a good performance on the day also saw Tim Mabey improve his standing. The other win on the day went to Simon Smith, easily outpacing the field from the front of the grid.
The Outlaw Hot Rods have an extra meeting at Arena Essex on October 13.
The Ministox continue to grow at Arena Essex with an encouraging meeting on September 29, featuring a full field with visitors from as far afield as the West Country, Nathan Olden paying a visit and showing the expertise of the Autospeed drivers by easily winning the second heat and almost winning the final before losing his way around the pit bend close to the end. Indeed the lead in the final was to change hands a number of times before Luke Armiger finally crossed the line, Kerri Witherington missing out on the win when she drifted too far wide on the same pit turn and had to brake hard to avoid a collision. The first heat went to Danny Stevens, and the consolation to Samantha Hayfield, though the other story of the day was first timer Luke Hadlow who grabbed second place in the first heat and a win in the Helter-Skelter race, which was quickly stopped at the end as Craig Oliver and Liz Williams came together, Liz ending up smashing into the QE2 end wall at full speed.
The war continues between the Midnight Runners and the Cream team at Arena Essex, following a week off for the National Bangers. The Custards upped the stakes this week, however, by calling in a few names from the past, including Dave Barwick who was responsible for quite a few wrecks, though the head on attack on Paul Whiteman in the first heat that led to an engine fire didn't stop him repairing and returning later in the meeting. With hostilities still rising, the team finals meeting in October will probably be something to see. Meanwhile the war has allowed some other drivers to grab silverware, with the heats being taken by Steve Thompson and Malcolm Fuller. The final saw a big field batter itself into mass submission, Billy King grabbing the Olly Moran Memorial title, the first of two trophies he got on the day, and one of only five finishers in the final. His other trophy was the last car award in the Rawlins 2000 Qualifier, which was won by team mate Andrew Davies, with an extra award for best wrecker going to John Harris.
