Ministox
Mark Rowley started off the racing for the Ministox at Arena Essex on September 10 with a win in the hastily finished novices' race, grabbing the lead two laps from home. The Experts heat went to Ray Layton who has had some considerable success in the last few meetings, though Joe Bullen put in the fastest race, settling in second from the back of the grid. Third spot Anthony Lawrence put in a good performance in the chase event which was stalled on the first start when Ricky Woolf and Kerry Witherington collided hard on the home straight. Glen Witherall had also made good progress in the chase and would improve on that as he jetted through and away in the final, Neal Gardiner following in second with Lawrence Davey finally picking up a trophy in the closing stages, just beatig out Vic Bilkey.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The Rose Cassidy Memorial meeting this year at Arena Essex, September 10, held some extra meaning for long term followers of stock cars this year as it appears straight after the Jock Lloyd Trophy, which was run barely five days before his death; Jock Lloyd and Rose Cassidy being contemporaries on the stock car circuits in years gone by as was promoter Chick Woodroffe. However Jock Lloyd Trophy winner Bill Batten didn't show for this years' event which left the whole thing open to the prevalent red tops; Chris Roots, twice winner of the award; Mick Sworder, a powerful force on the Arena circuit and Carl Issitt who also notches good performances up on the Purfleet 420. However it was a reative newcomer, Chris Goldsmith, who pulled down the first win, grabbing the lead early from Stu Whetstone then piling on the distance. Sworder tried too hard to get to the lead in this one and despite escaping when he climbed all over Peter Hobbs who then spun and collected Ian Chalkley, he lost valuable places in the process, which meant that it was virtually the last corner before he was in a position to try to lunge at Goldsmith and, in haste, he missed and spun out, leaving Goldsmith with his first Arena win with Issitt and Roots following home. The electrifying first heat was backed up by a more predictable second heat with Sworder cleaving his way to the front in typical fashion, grabbing the lead just over 2 laps from home, though Goldsmith kept second place from Issitt and Roots. Shadowing these cars all day was Steve Broomfield, and the meeting final would show that if a white top could do it, so could a blue top as Broomfield outran Peter Hobbs and Adrian Blackwell to take the lead well before the half way point before Sworder gradually reeled Broomfield in. With a few laps to go, Broomfield was in range, but Sworder left it to the last bend to attack and, as with the first heat, he missed! So Steve Broomfield took the title with Sworder recovering quickly enough to hold second from Roots. Sworder then went on to take first place in an interesting Grand National Qualifier from Issitt, while a promising run for Neal Smith came to a shuddering halt as he tried to push Chris Roots out close to home but got too square, Roots slamming the anchors on to slow the progress right down. Broomfield got to eighth from his one lap handicap behind Smith while Roots, who had spun early, finished out of the places.

National Bangers
It seemed a little odd that the first race in a Rising Stars meeting at Arena Essex should go to the oldest Banger racer still licensed at PRI, but Bob Kitchener made the first heat on September 10 look easy as he coasted home ahead of Den Catmore, another practiced hand at PRI Bangers. However the thrills were still to come as the Rising Stars put on a good show right through the afternoon. The second heat was ostensibly won by the Big Bamboo, Paul Lyons, until an official checked his tyres which, on reflection, were hardly road standard which saw Steve Farmer suddenly elevated to first spot. The finish had been hard enough as Lyons and Farmer, having displaced Graham Towner at the front, locked together down the home straight going to the line, Farmer catching a dead car by the wall and spinning while Lyons shot off onto the safety and straight into the empty Craig Hewitt car, Farmer just reversing over the line before Towner could shoot through the middle of the scrimmage. Lyons' effort was for nothing however and he was to come out in the consolation, just managing to claw his way into the final as the last runner of seven survivors in a 39 car start. An early pile up on the pit bend in that race saw most of the cars off, John Poulton dominating the racing while birthday boy Clive Harwood sacrificed second spot to go wrecking.

Only 24 of the 31 qualifiers limped out to do battle in the final, though the race was to be a hard one all the same including a roll for Karl Douglas who ran over the Neil Freeman/Jeffrey Scorah collision on turn two and skated onto his side! Freeman would then go on to drive like the wind, unlapping himself and getting within sight of the lead cars, getting fifth spot by the end. Of the wrecking, Ralph Thompson had to be the most prolific of the race including a sacrificial fencing of Simon Warner who had himself blitzed Ricky Sherwood earlier in the race. Of the race, however, it turned into a comfy win for Darren Nash with Phil Butler and Paul Ruskin well behind him. Again, only seven cars finished. The Rawlins qualifier was a win and last car effort from Mark Sprawling who jetted home easily while the world around him went boom including a massive jacking for Andy Reynolds by Danny Brown plugging the remaining hole in the home straight The DD ended after Sprawling jacked Thompson into Nathan Roberts, these three and Ruskin going at it for a fair while until Roberts finished Ruskin and himself and Sprawling backed away from a head on from Thompson that left Sprawling as the last runner.
