Ladies Bangers
Arena Essex, September 3, and the qualifying ladies lined up for the final of the Ladies Banger Championship 2000. Amanda Harris was to make most of the running up front, slicing through early pretenders to take the lead after only a lap or so completed while things started to get messy behind her. Elaine Witherington for example gave as good as she got, spinning out Ashley Clift early on then getting dumped in turn by Tracey Worthington. Even at the front, Amanda was not above the odd contact, TJ Stern being one victim. However the Harris special was to prove a fast contender all afternoon and Amanda‘s victory was the start of a successful day for the 418 non-Ford. Lynda Beaumont put in a spirited dash for the prize by could only make second after dumping eventual third spot visitor Sarah Futcher on the home straight close to home.

It seemed like business as usual as Sonny Sherwood jetted home to win the first Non-Ford heat at Arena Essex on September 3 except for a couple of details. The first was that Retard Roy Bramley was back and seemed to be determined to have a wrecking good time, a relief to Bramley fans who were getting somewhat concerned about their one and only and his antics this season, the second was that it was not Sherwood that got it all his own way this week. The first heat was a mostly roddy one, Mark Day trailing behind Sherwood after a valiant attempt to hold the lead late on while Bramley tested the wall after missing Luke Radley. Then the tables turned and the second heat went to John Harris with a drive that echoed his World Final win of a couple of years ago with a fine run ahead of Mark Newman while the majority of the wreckig action was provided courtesy of Dan Reid who took out Del Waterman, Charlie Shanahan and one time leader Jamie Bugden all head on! Reid also had a chunk out of Daniel Weller on his way to a race disqualification for dangerous driving. The third heat was another roddy one, George Rowbotham forgoing his usual antics to notch a win ahead of Stuart Ruff. As seems usual with the consolations these days, the whole affair soon became a big damage session which included a big boning for Shanahan from Kevin Mayo and a sandwiching for Mark Blackwell, Buzz Kelsey from behind and Reid and Bramley from the front! Kelsey was later loaded for dangerous driving while Jamie Wilders lost his chance when his car flamed up on the safety area. Lee Witherington too the win that time from Graham Lindfield and Tony Wade.

The final was declared close to home when a loose wheel from Darren Witheringtons‘ wreck prompted the reds to come out, though by that time the result was almost a foregone conclusion, nobody able to keep up with the Harris car as John Harris completed a double, a triple if you then included Amanda Harris‘ win in the Ladies ealier on. Harris had taken the lead in a painless inside pass from early leader Newman, though Newman kept second place from Sherwood who had also been charging up the field as usual. As for the rest, the biggest hits were going in downfield in the pit bend, John Harding gettig going with a spin to Ian Horton followed by a hit to Dean Conyard, Horton later to participate in a sandwich, Lee West providing the other slice, Radley being stuffed. That had followed a nutting for West by Radley shortly before. That just left the Rawlins qualifier, and wouldn‘t you know it, Harris won again! However the action got going early with Weller starting off with a nut for Andy Ashman, Jason Mills joining in from behind while Mark Ruskin took on Bernie French. Ian Maguire tried a head on with Lee Witherington before West made contact with Bramley who them got down to serious survival wrecking starting with Robbie ”No mates Joyce. Bramley was then spanked a couple of times by Greig Cheeseman as the chequered flag fell and the serious DD started, then Harris shunted Blackwell into Bramley, the doomed train crushing into Cheeseman. The wrecking lasted a fair while but eventually came down to Harris against Clive Killick, and this time the Harris car decided to yield.
