1300 Stock Cars
Another three race support day for the 1300 Stock Cars on
August 20 and a good performance in the warm up as Darren
Cardy drove his smart new green Corsa to victory ahead of
Derry Monk, a good attempt by fellow ex-Ministox pilot
Michael Coventry to keep second spot coming to nothing as
Monk first took him easily then the Coventry-mobile decided
to give it up. Steve Davies had problems of his own as the
main event was stalled at the start as he sat on the grid
with no power. Again, Coventry tried to hold the race and
this time made good progress at the front until he was caught
by Andy Brown close to half way and from there dropped away,
Brown pulling enough out to keep Monk down in second while an
uncharacteristic run by Spike Ellis kept Cardy down to
fourth. Cardy then repeated his warm up performance to win te
helter-skelter, Coventry this time keeping it together for
second while Simon Welton got his best finish of the day to
make a trio of ex-Ministox folk in the first three.
National Bangers
A growing trend in the Bangers of recent years is the
introduction of small car events, and who are Promotasport to
buck a trend when last year they staged a Metro meeting? This
year, however, they decided to pad the Metros out with
Fiestas and the resulting meeting had to be seen to be
believed! The tool of the day proved to be the XR2, though
the high end Metros displayed honourably, especially the Dale
"Daktari" Atkins motor which was high enough in the results
for notice among the winning Fiestas. It was Billy King that
started things off as a mistake midway by Craig Hewitt meant
that he could only clasp second spot, while Del Waterman and
John Harris proved that wrecking is not the sole preserve of
the larger motors. The meeting saw a large number of visitors
and temporary signings, Spencer Green and Nathan Crisp being
a couple of these that got well into the spirit of the
proceedings by nutting each other early in this first race!
There were thirty-one cars in that heat, there were forty-one
in the second, Grieg Cheeseman reclaiming his title of
"Cheese Roll" last used in his 1300 Stock Car days as he
stuck a two pointer in at the end of the race by the pit
gate. Waz Barber seemed a cert for the win but Sonny Sherwood
took over on the last lap when Barber piled into the car
park. Another win for Mushy, and another Fiesta win, Terry
Driver and Jason Jackson following. Neil Partridge would have
also got a good finish but sacrificed his position for hits
on Dave Edwards and Steve Macklin. The final was an
allcomers' event and, as some predicted, it was even bigger
with fifty-seven survivors hitting the track and each other,
a pile up contributing to the mayhem at the start, Hewitt
given Nick Harding the bumps early on while Lee Bassham,
another temp for the day, was hustled by Steve Wilks and most
of the cars that followed! Jamie Wilders received Boxer Jack
nose first while King and Daktari were to be taken by Lee
Caunter, but Atkins would emerge in the lead ahead of
Sherwood by half way. Driver was putting his snoot into
plenty including Darren Nash, though his best hit would be
the one he put up Harding into King, before Richard Day
finished him with a monster t-bone on the home straight.
Sherwood eventually took the lead in a messy double spin,
slicing Atkins out then putting himself round, though Mush
was the quicker away and though Andrew Davies would
eventually hit him with a view to unlapping himself, Sherwood
would finish with heat and final. He wasn't yet finished,
though. Sherwood also continued to win the more sedate
thirty-six car Rawlins qualifier while Harding supplied the
first Metro axle removal of the day, something the viewing
public had expected more of, Partridge supplied more grief
including a massive head on for Terry Driver Snr., and
Edwards seemed to be hit by almost everyone! Another
temporary, Danny McCormack, would eventually deny the Mush of
four trophies in one meeting, a feat that few have even
managed, by sticking one on the dying Sherwood Fiesta, this
after Bradley Hampton and John Drummond had played their own
cars out along with Edwards, Atkins and Davies.
