1300 Stock Cars
It was an interesting days' racing at Arena Essex on July 16 when the 1300 Stock Cars lined up for their third and final qualifying round for the Supreme Championship. Many thought that Derry Monk would extend his overall dominance that day, but his drivers' door hit into the armco of Andy Brown meant a disqualification in the first race, Derek Mortimer easily winning from Simon Welton, then Monk lost a wheel on the back straight, calling the result early and leaving him out of it as Welton held Mortimer off in the main event. The best that Monk could summon up was the fifth place in the helter skelter which would have been better if John McGirr had not spun him close to home to get third spot behind Mortimer, the winner this time being Darren Plumb. But everyone has one of those days...

Outlaw Hot Rods
Dave Fry and Gary Andrews were unfortunate casualties in the practice for the July 16 Diment Brothers Memorial, the first time that the Outlaw Hot Rods had contested the title at Arena Essex. Both suffered engine problems and were unable to make an appearance, which cut the field down so that the first heat planned was cancelled. The remaining heats and final, allcomers events, started off with a determined drive from Colin Crocker in a flag to flag victory, holding off Paul Simmons at the end after some of the fancied drivers pulled off with problems including Mark Lisowski whose fuel problems took him out of the running only a few laps from home while a gritty performance from Alan White led to his now solitary Pug 306 dying in a cloud of steam. The second heat was just as close, especially for Simmons who again found the lead just a little too far from his reach, this time denied him by Roy Rawlins who inherited the lead early on as White ended up with a front wheel jammed up under the body after hitting the wall. The final, however, belonged to the visitors with Rod Brewer building a sizeable lead over Wayne Brewer, Simmons and Lisowski who spent the majority of the latter part of the laps scrapping over second place!

National Bangers
The Martin Symes Memorial was first raced in 1997, won that year by Russ McAngus and since by Kev Wilsher and Jason McMahon, the latter of whom returned this year to Arena Essex to compete for the fourth running on July 16. He started well in fact, beating out current RJK points leader Sonny Sherwood in the first race for a win. McMahon had a half lap on Sherwood by the end of a fairly roddy race. McMahon was not to survive long after that though, being wrecked early in the final. Meanwhile, the second heat saw another essentially spin and go race with Harry Rawlins evading a last minute charge from Chris Hussey to win with Tony Wade making up ground quickly in third spot. The consolation was the usual mess with Phil Rumsey barely surviving a walling from Lee Claydon to grab ninth and John Bolton not so lucky after a jacking from Claydon. The race eventually went to Dean Adams with Bernie French following, Steve Macklin losing third spot after spinning out close to home. Final time, and as already mentioned, defending champion McMahon was unable to keep it going as he got involved in a pile up on turn two, he and consolation winner Adams being crushed in the throng. The race seemed to be a two way fight between Rawlins and Paul Dolman until Rawlins did the dirty on Dolman, then jacked Joe Warner by the gate, leaving Jason Jackson to take the lead. Although always within sight of Boxer Jack, Richie Ahern could not catch up and had to settle for second behind Jackson, with Dave Greenstreet in third ahead of a frantic last half drive from Sherwood, salvaging points after a poor start. Dolman would eventually make up for his loss in the final with a comfortable win ahead of McMahon and Ahern in the Rawlins Qualifier, while a double car death after a much sought after head on between McMahon and Greenstreet meant a dead heat for the pair in the last car award.
