Ministox
John Maynard started off the day for the Ministox at Arena Essex on July 23 with a win after just muscling out Gary Brown in the novices race, while Lee Smith won the experts heat after some trouble including a stoppage when Danny Mann rolled right over at the Aveley end. Lawrence Davey actually crossed the line first but was docked after his kerb-crawling trick that had given him the lead on the last lap. Davey made up for that in the curtailed Chase which was halted after Michael Williams and Brown collided amongst others. Davey finally managed a clean win in the final in a new twenty lap record time of 6' 48" with Smith trailing some way behind.

SuperBangers
The SuperBangers had a quick outing on July 23 at Arena Essex, starting with an easy win for Jumbo Kingsmill in the warm up race after Buster Woods left the door open on turn four, then followed up with another win in the sprint race with Chris Whiteman in a strong second after punting John Alder wide close to home. Whiteman then went on to win the final, easily coming home ahead of Tony Shelvey who headed up a place scramble with Nigel Hepburn and Terry Shelvey, all three making good last quarter runs.

Lightning Rods
There was a surprise waiting in the pits at Arena Essex on July 23 when fifty cars turned up for the English Championship. The promotion promptly expanded the number of qualifiers from each race to ten then everyone sat back for some great racing, starting off with a win for ex-Banger teamster Brian Orriss who inherited the lead after early leader John Wicks blew out, while Mick Thompson stayed with Orriss all the way home. The second heat was declared on the second stoppage when Colin Clark and Rob Deville were collected by the spinning John Christie, the win going to Pat Kenneally. Wicks made up for his first heat problems with a consolation win, just ahead of Dave Halford. Tim O'Reilly started the final off ominously in a cloud of steam, one of many who succumbed to the forty lap marathon which was led early on by Wicks until he repeated his first heat trick, Mick Chute taking over until he was collected by a Shaun Coveney spin, one of many red tops that piled up at that point, leaving Orriss ahead temporarily, thanks to a typical Banger style avoid, until his car gave it up and Chute retook the lead, the field now well spread. That is how it finished, with Thompson in third behind Eddie Gibbs with Mick Chute the new English Champion. Kenneally held on to win the allcomers' race at the end despite some hard pressure from Orriss.
