Ladies Bangers
After many meetings of qualifying, the Ladies lined up for
the final time this year at Arena Essex on September 5 to
finish off the Essex Jaguars Championship, won by Tracey
Worthington who took the lead quickly at the start then
jetted away with Andi Coppin in tow. It was somewhat
unfortunate for Coppin however that Maria Islatt caught her
and spun her shortly before the stoppage that ended the race
when Lisa McLeland got into trouble by the Tavern, putting
Tracey Woolmore into second and Elaine Witherington in third
while defending champion Trish Woolner failed to make the top
eight.
National Bangers
Another large field showed up for the Plastengrave meeting
on September 5 at Arena Essex. Bob Dunn took the first win of
the day after Andy Ashman, who had led before him, decided to
try following the OSH regular into the Tavern turn only to
mistime it and wreck himself on the armco, Dan Reid getting
second after sorting a few messes of his own out. More
wrecking in the second heat as the field jumped up in numbers
with a few latecomers, Steve Witherington winning here by
over half a lap from Andrew Parker and Clive Killick while
Alice Howes, Ray Foot, Ian Horton and others combined to
block up the second corner. Heat three was also well attended
with Wee Tommy McGurk doing his usual party piece in an old
Hillman Minx, pinning Jason Mills in turn two while Stuart
Riff took the win ahead of Darren Stern and Rob Barlow.
However if you wanted classic hitting, you needed to wait for
the consolation when as is the custom all hell broke loose
starting with a nutting for Brian Church from Ian Knight, a
multiple jacking session with Horton getting lifted by Mark
Woolner only for Ricky Korpiela to charge up Woolners' diff
end. Korpiela also took on Craig Hewitt before Joe Harknett,
in for the day, gave Korpiela a taste of what he had been
dishing out along with Paul Dolman and Luke Radley. Brad
Theaker tried some car-obatics himself when he buried Alex
Imobden and nearly himself on turn one, while Horton closed
out the race pounding Korpiela into turn three, the race
itself going to Dom Tomlinson from Chris Strachan and Garry
Deacon.
Paul Hawkes took his customary front position at te start of the final, and as seems to be the case more often than not he was soon spun off that position though that was the least of his worries as a pile up started on turn two when Dave Wilmott jacked Andrew Parker into George Rowbotham on the turn one armco. Graham Hayward, a regular visitor for the non-Fords, was slowly being destroyed on turn three, so he was an easy implement to use Jeffrey Scorah decided to t-bone Bob Dunn, using the Heyward car as a battering ram. Shortly after and out came the red flags as Jason McMahon rolled on his roof, Hawkes pulling in to protect until the cars had stopped. Steve Witherington was at the front of the restart as Heyward and Darren Stern met with Jason Jackson on the Tavern turn, Jackson turning after that to try and catch a front runner and after many boss shots finally caught Alan Greenfield with whom he finished the race swapping head ons. However it was Stuart Ruff who took the win after Witherington picked up a corner cut penalty, Sonny Sherwood getting second spot while the lunatic antics of Chris Clarke on the pit bend earned him a case of beer from the Bangers Onelist group who were in for the meeting, watching the goings on from the Tavern turn fence. A full natter shot in the drivers' door by McGurk on Mark Mahoney got him loaded in the Rawlins Qualifier and brought the reds out which saw plenty of hits around the track in a forty-one car start. By this time we had already seen Horton done by Lee Witherington and Frankie Holmes getting a Cream enema courtesy of John Harding while McGurk himself had suffered a tbone from Steve Macklin shortly before Macklin received a hit from Sherwood. McGurk was ejected and everyone lined up behind Brad Theaker who had been leading at the time. He kept the lead to the end, though Bob Sterling motored up from fourth to deny Dan Reid second before Hawkes finally managed to thrash the field to get the last car running award.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The BriSCA F2 Stock Cars showed up at Arena Essex on
September 5 for the Rose Cassidy Memorial, starting with a
white and yellow grade opener won by Martin Buckley well
ahead of Barry Parker, while Chris Roots made his stand at
the top of the local points that bit firmer by grabbing a
heat and final double, the heat ahead of Neal Smith, then
after Graham Bunter took the consolation in a race that was
led most of the way by Alan Jackson, Roots took the final
close to the finish, shoving Mick Marr and Buckley out of the
way to do it. Jackson made up for his earlier loss in the
consolation by leading the field home in the Grand National
Qualifier, Nic Grindrod getting second from Buckley by a
whisker.
