National Bangers
Another well turned out Rising Stars heat at Arena Essex on June 13 saw current form SuperBanger driver Terry Shelvey pick up a heat win along with Paul Harden, another driver currently experimenting in another formula. Shelvey was half a lap ahead in his heat with Dave Edwards trying to make the difference up until he spun down to fourth by Kevin Stace, leaving Anthony Steventon free in second, while Harden took his lead back after a series of hits took the passing crowd out including a Spike Dray t-bone for Andy Staggs. The consolation went the way of Kev Wood on the last lap, putting Pete Vine down to second while Tommy McGurk did his usual thing and turned for a massive head on, his victim this time being Mark Harding, while Staggs managed third spot by hurdling a pile up on two wheels by the Tavern. The final win went the way of Paul Hunter from Danny Bateman and Dave Edwards in a five car finish out of 31 starters, the runners eventually spread over two laps, Edwards then going on to take the win in the Rawlins 2000 qualifier before Bateman wiped him out along with Dray for a last car entry into the final.

BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The June 13 Arena Essex meeting for BriSCA F2 Stocks was reasonably well attended, with a few unexpected drivers including Willi Peters and Mick Sworder, both of whom provided some excellent driving during the day. The first race, however, went the way of Mark Guinchard who has had a measure of success on the Arena tarmac, with former Superstox regular Chris Roots stuffing out fellow ex-Super rival Gary Ellis to take second spot on the last bend in. Roots was destined to take the second heat as the race was stopped close to home in a pile up that involved Sworder, Guinchard, Ian Jardine and Stuart Chalkley, to name a few. A pile up also affected the final as most of the midfield ended up in one, leaving the white tops to the tender mercies of the superstar grades, though Gary Maynards' hit on Peters was a little over the top, Maynard burying Peters on the pit bend banger style! The white tops didn't have much of a chance, and Roots took another win with Carl Issitt four seconds behind him, Ellis and Steve Broomfield following. Guinchard took the Grand National qualifier, but had to work for it as he held off Ellis with Sworder and Issitt also closing by the end, finally digging the last bit of power out within the last five laps to grab a safe margin for victory.

Lightning Rods
There seems to be a Lightning Rod revival at the moment, certainly if the numbers and the quality of racing at Arena Essex is anything to go by. The three heat affair that took place on June 13 provided some more excellent and above all close racing, the first heat going to Mick Thompson who took the lead on after a double hit on the back straight - Rob Carr on Steve Holding and Peter Waite on Nathan Bone - brought out the waved yellows. The second race however showed the down side of this sort of racing as Geoff Bowen met with Melvyn Poolman and Bryan Whiteman by the pits. Bowen, for reasons unclear at present, pulled his car free then ran into Whiteman's car banger style, then ejected. Although this hit didn't finish it for the race - a pile up close to home that came as a result of a spin by Fred Moss saw to that - it finished the meeting for Bowen. The race went the way of Chris Rabbitt with Mick Thompson picking up second spot having run Rabbit close in the last few laps of action. There was a big scrabble for places at the start of the final with Rabbitt finally pulling out in front, but this would only be a half race affair as Thompson and Darren Ahern approached the front to do battle through the final segment. Ahern tried repeatedly to find a passing line, only to be closed out each time until the last lap when he finally found an opening inside. However it was felt by the steward that the gap was too small as Thompson went sideways across Aherns' bonnet, hence the result was reversed, Thompson first, Ahern second, Rabbitt holding third from Don Anderson.
