Ladies Bangers
The Ladies just get heavier at Arena Essex. That is not a
personal reference to get the drivers competing in the Essex
Jaguars sponsored Ladies series on some new diet, but it is a
comment on the degree of speed and force now coming into the
top flight of Banger racing, as seen for example on June 6,
when Jenny Outen managed to muscle through from the second
row to pull out an early lead only to be spun close to home,
rejoin in second then see the leader, Paula Sewell, conk out
less than 100 yards to the finish line! Mandy Cheeseman
sprinted home well in second while Trina Wade, who finished
third, spent a fair amount of time finding new and
interesting ways of hitting obstacles of one kind or another,
more than once sacrificing places including to Cheeseman!
Plastengrave Bangers
The third Plastengrave Non-Ford meeting at Arena Essex on
June 6 was a large affair, with plenty of travellers in again
including the Heywoods whose weekend also took in the
Mildenhall Pre-70's classic the night before! That's
dedication for you! However, the meeting came down to another
heat and final performance, this time to Kev Hirse whose
final performance in particular was something to behold! The
first heat, however, went to a first time winner, driving a
Vauxhall, a theme that would be repeated more than once
through the meeting. Andrew Parker was given the win after
Dave Greenstreet's car, parked midway across turn four, was
suspected of burning. With most of the last lap already gone,
a red flag meant a declaration, though the race was stopped
earlier when Paul Jell completed a two point roll inside
turns three and four. Tony Locky, down from RDC for the day,
was a convincing second. The second heat was a Wreckin Krew
triple, Kev hirse leading teamies Ian Smith and Craig Polley
home in a well spread race, noted mostly for the antics of
Roy Bramley and Stuart Adcock who spent most of the race
exchanging some pretty large hits, at least some of which
connected! Heat three and a Wacky Racer victory as Terry
Barton drove out of his skin to win, even outpacing Chris
Whiteman, at least up to the chequered flag, after which
Barton bailed out into the armco approaching Aveley. Dave
Robinson was ahead three laps out, and the prospects of a
close finish were likely until back marker Craig Hewitt, who
had been missed as a qualifier from heat three, took a hand
and spun Luke Radley. Although Radley maintained his second
spot at the end, Robinson had an easy cruise home in
comparison with what he might have had.
Tom Hardings' early final lead ended on turn two close to the start of the race, Jon Hewitt taking over initially with Kev Hirse in pursuit. Meanwhile Karl Vanner and Craig Polley seemed content to swap hits, a theme that would go right through the race, while Chris Whiteman motored up the order to sixth before dumping erstwhile colleagues Allan Trickett and John Randall, Tony Locky also coming to grief with a colleague, this time current Mildenhall track champion Sonny Sherwood. However things would change mid race as Hewitt and Hirse gone, and Locky all tied up. The lead passed to Lee Witherington until Buzz Kelsey, who had been instrumental in the holding of Hewitt and Hirse before, again interfered by slicing Witherington into a parked car by the pit gate, leaving Hirse to duel with Kelsey to the line, despite the fact that Kelsey was lapped! Witherington recovered to second while Darren Witherington pulled in third. The Rawlins Qualifier went the way of Sid Smith, though the talking point had to be the double hit on current points leader Phil Hudson, hit head on by Keith Wildman on his first race of the day, then followed from the side by Darren Witherington. Balders emerged from the car dazed but healthy. The last car award went to Chris Whiteman after surviving another battle with arch-rival Tony Wade, making a rare appearance at Arena Essex in the Trina Wade car from the earlier Ladies race.
1300 Saloon Stock Cars
Another round of the embryonic World Championship series for
1300 Saloon Stock cars passed at Arena Essex on June 6, with
a few surprises popping up as Swalley Buckley pinched the
first heat, running inside long time leader James Stace
before Andrew Palmer launched a last minute attack than
failed to hit the desired target, spinning Stace down to
third and himself to fifth, John McGirr taking the advantage
to snatch second. Rain hit the second heat, Ricky Wolf making
the most of it to pick up another win with most of the star
grades not having much luck, though this does not include
Derry Monk who seemed to love the wet, firing out cars to all
sides to get to fourth before the heat was stopped and
declared when Anthony Oak rolled onto his roof on the back
straight. Stace kept up the good work and in heat three it
paid off as the track dried out and Stace managed to survive
the attentions of Wolf to get a win ahead of McGirr and
Elliott Wainwright. Stace was also to finally decide the
winner of the final, although he did not actually finish it.
His technique seemed to be to let the car pass then spin, and
it was a tackle that saw off Wolf, Oak and McGirr, though not
Elmo as he jetted past, McGirr following and close enough to
get Stace's last push before the car gave out. First to
Elliot Wainwright, with McGirr and Steven Jackson following.
