Speedy defends the BBA Supreme

Speedy Wins From: Chris Johnson/Arena Essex <arena@argonet.co.uk>
Subject: [Mildenhall] Soggy stocks and brown bangers (7/4/01)

Despite his retirement at last years' Unlimited Open at Wimbledon, Alan "Speedy" Reed turned up at Mildenhall on April 7's BBA Supreme Championship meeting, complete with Granada Hearse in full Banham Poultry livery, along with 21 other top drivers from Autospeed, Incarace, PRI, RDC, Spedeworth and Trackstar. The wet conditions made the soaked shaleway difficult to traverse but Reed took off from the start and left the field in a brown wake as he shot around the circuit as if on rails, many other drivers floundering in his wake though a few tried unsuccessfully to derail him as he successfully defended the title, second place Dave Vincent nowhere near him as he finished. Vincent would go on to be the most successful driver of the day, however, as Reed retired and Vincent easily took the final trophy before outsmarting a 20 car field to with the Accumulator Qualifier as the last car legally running.

On a wet night on April 7 at Mildenhall, expectations were high that John McGirr would repeat his domination of the 1300 Saloon Stock cars as he did at their last meeting in January. However the field seemed determined to hold him out of the winnings, with Darren Cardy denying McGirr of his most promising attempt while Paul Haralambou won a heat and final double as McGirr battled fiercely with Ricky Hunn in the final and Neil Dunne in the first heat just to secure a few points.
