Mildenhall started up in earnest tonight with the Winter series and all its problems behind it, though torrential rain the night before meant that the inner parts of the turns were still very boggy and churned, though a good sunny spell on the day gave the rest of the track enough impetus to dry off to give both the Bangers and the BriSCA's a good surface to get some fast racing in, while the boggy curves provided an interesting obstacle for some of the more daring or more unfortunate to deal with.
The first race up was the first of the Novice of the Year Qualifiers which was inaugurated this year at RDC, no doubt as a way of getting new blood into the sport and a way of giving the snowdrops an open field to themselves. However, though the race went eventually to Dave Matthews (964), the talk had to be the post chequered attack by Andy Demeza (31) on a home straight fence post which sent him flying sideways in a two point roll! Obvously he had taken the idea of starting the season with a bang to heart...The BriSCA F2 World of Shale was still appreciably mud stricken, but the cars did manage a good turn of speed if they avoided the inner line which is how Dave Tomlinson (885) and Andy Ford (13) took away heat wins in a well turned out field. The consolation was fairly tame as Stuart Haywood (140) rode the procession home before the 23 car final which turned out to be gripping enough to make up for any lack in the track! Danny Quinnen (66) managed to nudge his way up from fourth after the start to the lead and held on well as the early pacesetters dropped away. However he could so easily have lost it as Mark Taylor (790) charged through the ranks to second place after halfway, gradually closing until the final lap saw Taylor on Quinnen's back and ready to pounce. However this was always assuming that the trailing cars would stay out of the way, and while Quinnen went through with no problem, Taylor clipped and rode, losing enough ground to deny him the final win. Chris Mitchell (219) was a distant third. Matt Chesterton (853) picked up the Grand National win, again denying Taylor a winners' trophy while the handicapped Quinnen managed to get up to seventh from a lap down.
The sudden influx of late booking Bangers had two effects on the meeting. The first was to add a heat and split the consolation, while the second was to drop the Accumulator round. This last was unfortunate but hardly unexpected given that the meeting finished close to midnight even with the cut! What you see here (picture left) is a front shot of a car that Tommy McGurk (P430) had a back shot of. I would have taken a back shot myself but what you see is all that Wee Tommy left after a back straight jacking, balls out! The wrecking got heavier as the night wore on, even resulting in some unwanted bad sportsmanship in one of the consis, though all was contained well enough. However the night belonged to Richie Ahern (100) who managed a heat and final double, with other heats going to Jason Colbert (21) and PRI's Kerry Goldstone (546), Mark Ruskin (32) taking one consi while Wayne Doland did a good job of holding Lee Overy (71) off for the other.
Another good night, though I wish I could stay awake on the way home!!!
