Bangers
It was heat and final double time on doubles day as the small
cars came together literally for the annual Chained Pair Banger
Championship at Arena Essex on June 21.
The first race went to Iain Knight and Martin Peters* in a race that didn't see too much contact other than when Billy Standing and Garry Deacon went into the side of Lewis Price - paired with Danny McCormack - on turn four. Tony Broughton and Paul Page just managed to get third behind Phil Smith and Mark Munson after numerous spins as more than one pair struggled to run in the unusual setup. The struggle increased in the second heat as a number of pairs discovered the differences between loose chains and tight, Broughton and Page made up for their blunder by winning the second heat, followed by the first heat winners. Knight and Peters let nothing stop them in the final, ramming Price and McCormack out of the way shortly after the start then jetting away to a win, driving through Alfie Lee and Danny Stevens as they jack-knifed in front of them on the home straight close to the end. Andy and Dave Reynolds grabbed second while Price and McCormack provided some entertainment with Noddy's car well bent at the back giving the pair an interesting driving line and the other pairs a real task when passing them! The meeting finished with a spinner's special, won by Danny Stevens, followed by the usual destruction derby which was split between Dave Reynolds and Ian Smith, Reynolds' back end finishing rather flat but both cars failing to stop despite repeated pummelling.
* Thanks to Tony in the office for confirming the identity of this driver. Martin has, apparently, just licenced with PRI.
Superbangers
Brian Jarvis was back on form in the SuperBangers at Arena Essex
on June 21 as he took the lead going down to the three lap board
in the first heat, then managed to burn off James Avison from
about three laps out in the second heat, Avison trying to get a
bit of Jarvis' back end a lap after being passed but not enough
to make much difference. Steve Davies was just unable to pass
Avison by the flag. Jarvis wasn't to have it all his own way in
the final as he, Davies, Avison and Chris Trickett had a scrap of
it further back in the field, allowing Bernie French to race
ahead from the yellow grade, Trickett following in second from
Davies while early white top leader Steven Saveall ended up in
the turn one fence in front of Roger Trickett following the
chequered flag.
Ministox
It was a very rough day for the Ministox at Arena Essex on June
21 but a good one for Cambridgeshire traveller Sid Madgwick who
pulled in the final win and two second places behind Alex Little
in the heats.
Little managed to win a shortened first heat as Andrew Milner and Matt Abbott met head on around the bridge bend leading to a red flag finish. Madgwick followed in second place at a distance and Curtis Tebbenham took third place, much to his surprise as he was spun on the back straight shortly before the stoppage. Little did it again in the second heat, appearing from nowhere to take the win with Madgwick chasing in second having fought off Joe Coultish after the half way mark. The race managed to make the full distance but not without some contact including a vicious t-bone for erstwhile Spedeworth driver Abbott by Incarace visitor Shaun Blakemore at the bridge end. Little didn't get a chance in the final with a thrilling finish with a win for Madgwick ahead of Tebbenham and Jack Deacon, Thomas Judd getting a big fetch in on turn one from Declan Salmon close to the end of the race.
