Report

Ministox
Barking based Ministox driver Stephen Hackett managed to pick up a heat and final double at Arena Essex Raceway on May 17 during the Shootout meeting.

The first race was stopped once after a number of collisions on the very first corner starting with Curtis Tebbenham going into John Avery, a pile up bringing out the red flags, and it was stopped again short of the scheduled finish, again due to a crash involving Tebbenham who spent his entire race getting into scuffles with various other cars while Hackett took the eventual win. Declan Salmon took the second heat by half a length following a waved yellow stoppage as Ray Petty was sent to the wall on the home straight. Salmon had taken the lead from early leader Danny Mitchell but almost lost it on the last corner on the run to the line, just holding visiting driver Robert Gamble off after a number of other lead cars earlier in the race were to drop back following a poor restart. Hackett then went on to win the final, holding on to the lead in the closing stages from Jack Deacon and George Simmons who was having his own closing stage battle with Sid Madgwick. Georgie Lee had been leading well into the final stages but had to bow out after losing a wheel on turn two.

Saloon Stocks
Todd Jones became the heat and final winner of this year's Essex Championship for the 2l Saloon Stock Cars. He took over the lead to win comfortably in the final half of the race after passing last year's winner, brother Murray Jones.

Todd took the first race in convincing style after pushing the Nigel Parker car out of the way rounding turn two before Kelven Nichols spun Parker out down the home straight. Second place driver Shane Brown just managed to wrestle second place away from Scott Aldridge on the line. Parker managed to hold his lead in the second heat despite a last lap ambush attempt by Nichols, the car that spun him out on the previous heat in a race affected by a light shower and quite a bit of contact on the bottom of the home straight.

Bangers
Harry Stevens was the winner of the 2009 Shootout meeting, the mid-year unlimited banger open meeting at Arena Essex.

Kevin Snell got his wish in the first race as his car, with “first blood” painted proudly on one side, was the first car into the fence after meeting up with Danny Chiddle, while Trackstar veteran Annette Nichols started out well in her nicely turned out Steam Team Jag but dropped from the lead after she applied a spin to Jamie Pearce early on in the race, taking a bit of damage in the process. Once the race had got under way, Alfie Lee made his way to the front to win, Lee West trying to catch him but unsuccessfully as the laps ran out. Snell was in trouble again in the main race but he was hardly alone as turn one filled up and former World Champion John Harris fought with Ian Smith on the pit bend. The Shootout title itself went to Harry Stevens. Snell, however, came away with a trophy in the final race, that being a demolition derby for which yet more pounding got him the award for best wrecked car while Stevens took another race win and the last car running award went to Danny Oliver after a lengthy battle.
