| Report |
Our first double-header of the year kicked off with a four formula special on Easter Sunday, including events for the 1300cc Stock Cars, Lightning Rods and Group A Hot Rods along with the first meeting of the year for the SuperBangers.
The first heat for the 1300cc was won by regular PRI starter Sharon Ashworth, jumping away from the white top pack to take her first ever win in the formula. Paul Haralambou took a very late second place in a final quarter scrap for the places. Sharon came close in the second heat but wasn't quite up to spinning eventual winner Scott Hughes out of the way so she had to settle for second place this time. The final was eventually taken by George Heath after a tight battle with Darren Pratt in the final laps following a stoppage after Gemma Nelson crashed into the pit bend wall and Chris Noble got stuck on the back straight following a three way crash. Joey Palmer took third place in the final by inches from Hughes.
If it was a good day for day licence driver Mark Nicholls in the Group A Hot Rods, grabbing two heat wins, it was even better for former Group A champion Dave Lamb who pranced away easily from the outside pole to a wide victory following second places in both heats from the back of the grid. The first few places, taken by Lamb, Dave Gooch and Nicholls with Mike Nicholls in fourth, was fairly straightforward but, behind them, a battle was raging between Dave Hutchins and Nicky Parris which was eventually joined by Rob West.
It was a triple win for Gary Greenland in the Lightning Rods, both heats taken from the yellow tops while the final was taken from pole position. Greenland went outside early heat one leader Paul Strawson to run away with the trophy for that heat with Steve Willis chasing ahead of Lee Morrow and Roy Rawlins. Greenland then took the second heat from Willis in similar style, though this time the fight for the lead was with Willis and proved to be much harder. This left the pair at the front of the grid in the final but Greenland didn't have another battle as, this time, Willis ended up in the fence by the pits. Greenland won easily in the final, with John Randall chasing in second after shaking off Rawlins, Morrow and Andy Brown.
This was the first meeting of the year for the Superbangers, and it proved a big success for new bug Paul Hunter who managed to pin down a heat and final double, with a second place in the first heat behind Superbanger veteran Steve Davies, the pair dominating the results all day.
