A minute‘s silence was observed before the August 5 meeting as a mark of respect to Southampton banger driver Barry Collins who died in an accident in a scrapyard the previous week.

Ladies Bangers
Stacey Ruskin became this years‘ final winner of the Ladies Championship qualifiers for Bangers at Arena Essex on August 5, easily outpacing the field, even second place and former holder of the Championship title, Kelly Wilson, was unable to catch her. Deborah Whiteman had tried to repeat her earlier 1300cc Stock Car success but, although she was quickly off the line, she was unable to control the car into the corners. The final Championship race takes place at Arena Essex on Sunday, September 9th.

1600cc Bangers
Controversy reigned at the Arena Essex 1600cc Banger meeting on August 5 as championship leader Jason Jackson was removed from the result of the meeting final following a query about his Honda and whether it actually fell within the 1600cc rules. Jackson had just come in first in the main meeting final only to be told that the steward of the meeting had become suspicious of the car and the speed it was able to muster alongside the other cars in the meeting. Unable to state for certain whether the car was within the rules, Jackson drove off, leaving the final trophy behind for Paul Whiteman who was judged to be the winner.

The meeting featured plenty of other action, including a couple of two point rollovers — Danny Gardiner took a hit at the wrong angle and rolled onto his roof on turn four in one race and Kelly Wilson also managed a flip of her own, the second this year! Billy Standing won the first heat which didn‘t feature too much wrecking apart from one head-on for veteran Chelmsford driver Buzz Kelsey, while Jackson took the second heat in an order restart that saw him taking on team mate Whiteman as well as Stuart Palmer. Whiteman also took the Rawlins qualifier, both race and last car, again playing with Palmer and Phil Milner.

Group A Hot Rods
A hot day for the Group A Hot Rods at Arena Essex, August 5, meant high speed action as Chris Smith took yet another final win, holding defending champion Dave Lamb off for much of the way until Lamb tried for a gap that turned out not to be there and spun out of the race by the pit gate. Dan Moulton picked up another heat trophy after chasing down Keith Furnell, passing outside the white grader on the last turn before the line in the first race, while Danny Hunn streaked away to win the second heat, missing out on all the fun of second place where an early effort by Joe Weal came to nothing as everyone came together, Moulton taken out on the nose of Mark West while Lamb spun ahead of Steve Gooch.

Ministox
Another heat and final double for Jimmy Galloway in the Ministox at Arena Essex on August 5. Starting well with the rest of the red tops, Galloway moved quickly through for the final win ahead of current rivals Vinni Madden, Rob Hull and Liam Friel. Earlier in the day Remi Gay won her very first race in the formula ahead of Sarah Taylor who pulled a good inside move to grab her spot ahead of Brad Bailey. Galloway won the second heat T-Jay Powers who would later go on to win the third heat ahead of Madden and Friel.
