Lightning Rods
It was a good day for former Lightning Rod World Champion Richard
Pannell at Arena Essex on April 8 as he took a heat and final
double win. His heat win was a tight fought affair which ended in
his passing Dave Imber on the outside after the pair passed the
early leader Terry Rollings five laps from home, then Pannell had
a somewhat easier time of it in the final as he managed to jump
to the front early on to leave the rest of the field to fight
over the other places, this coming to a head when Imber tried to
emulate Pannell's earlier feat and ended up in trouble on turn
two. Imber had also taken a heat win during the day along with
Brian Smith who had recovered from a spin in an earlier heat.
SuperBangers
Things looked promising for Bob Sterling as he beat the field in
both heats in the SuperBanger formula at Arena Essex on April 8
but, his engine blowing up spectacularly in the dying moments of
the final, he limped home in fourth place. The final was yet
another feud between the Butlers and the Tricketts, Phil Butler
taking the final win ahead of Chris Trickett and Tubbs
Butler.
Bangers
Another weekend, another session of team warring at Arena Essex
on April 8, though there were other things to see as Jason
Jackson took the meeting final win before obliterating day
licence driver Brad Turner on the pit gate during the Rawlins
Destruction Derby Qualifier. Michael Seex looked promising in the
first heat until he started to suffer from steering problems,
letting Billy Standing through to win comfortably, then ex-World
Champion Matt Fuller took a win in the second heat, both heats
filled with the usual trappings of Gladiator and Bad Company
wrecking, before Boxer Jack raced home to victory in the final.
Stuart Palmer took the race section of the Rawlins race before
Dave Osborn, Phil Cullen and Sonny Sherwood fought it out for the
last car running award, Osborn narrowly taking it.
