PRI Banger Teams
An unprecidented five victories from five events in the PRI
Banger Team Championships for the Gravesend Condoms was
completed at the Final Eliminator at Arena Essex on August
21, thanks mostly to the wrecking antics of other teams
leaving the pink folk an easy victory by just keeping away
from the mayhem that surrounded them. Blacknuts Douglas
provided the first victory of the day that would help Bad
Company into the runner-up spot and into the head-to-head
final in October whilst Rob Farrington took the second heat,
noted for the antics of Gary Brown of the Cream Team and
Ricky Korpiela of the Midnight Runners who would continue
their teams' battle left over from round four. The Creams had
all but lost everyone by the consolation as the Runners came
out mob handed but would be beset by Garry Deacon on the back
straight who managed to kill off all but Davey Cox, the only
Runner with a place in the final, although a mix-up would
also see Jimmy Randall taken through. The consolation winner
was Lee Hackett getting the best finish of the day for the
fading challenge by the EastEnder team. The final mostly
boiled down to a few rods making the points and a couple of
bashes including Ray Layton getting a squishing on turn three
by Nathan Roberts, the victory going to Paul Russell but a
head count of four Condoms meaning that there was no doubt
about the winners.
The Rawlins 2000 qualifier was somewhat closer as Billy King outwitted teammate Andrew Davies on the last corner, grabbing the inside line on the pit bend amongst the rubbish to grab the win whilst Randall mixed it up with his teammates, eventually tying up the last car award with Korpiela by the bridge.

Mick Sworder has suffered at Arena Essex in recent
appearances for a variety of reasons, but was back at the top
on August 21 when he notched up a heat and final double.
Chris Bradbury also put in a good performance, finishing
second to Sworder in the first heat, winning the sprint heat
and getting third in the final behind Ian Chalkley. Chalkley
would then go on to win the Grand National qualifier, with
Bradbury hot on his tail in second.
