August Bank Holiday Monday traditionally means Big Vans at Arena Essex, and a good turnout of vans this year meant that fun was had by all. Well, nearly.

Rob Chiddle takes the honours this year, managing to avoid the scrapheaps that tended to pile up on the corners, especially with team hostilities continuing and a number of other drivers just having a good time, including Roy Rawlins and Barry Wilsher who were especially destructive in the Rawlins 2000 Qualifier/Demolition Derby at the end. Heat wins went to Andy Spooner and Jason McMahon, with Tony Abrehart winning said Rawlins 2000 Qualifier, while Paul Lawes did his best to pummel the field into submission, grabbing last van running status and leaving a real puzzle of wreckage to clear up.

A fire in the pits shortly before the Rawlins 2000 Qualifier drew a large crowd as one of the vans, being readied for battle in the oncoming race, burst into flames. From reports pitside, it seems that the petrol tank had ruptured and a spark had ignited the fuel.

It was a good day for Tubbs Butler in the SuperBangers, winning two races from three including a last minute rush for the line in the warm up race. Gary Palmer won the final in a day made a little tricky for all as the Big Vans left plenty of oil behind, especially on the pit bend.

Darren Plumb managed two victories in the 1300 Stock Cars and might have made it three if he had managed to finish the main event. He was well on his way too but then had to avoid an ill advised dive for the safety area by Trevor Manning's crippled machine, causing Plumb to lose control. Andy Brown won the main event in what can only be described as a poor turnout.
