The whole schedule was torn up as the cars booking into the April 21 meeting at Arena Essex were totally unexpected.

It started with a pre-meeting event, the Reg Pryor Memorial for the Veteran Stock Car Association in borrowed cars from the Banger participants. The old boys showed that age had not bowed them, especially winner Ken Sanders who put up a good show ahead of his peers, including a few previous winners of this event.

The Bangers were something of a surprise, since it was expected that there would be a light showing which led to the cutting of the Rawlins 2000 heat at the end with the DD amalgamated to the final. There was nothing light about it, however, when the cars took the circuit for the first of their three races, with over forty cars on circuit and no less than thirty in any race. Hard fought wins went to Waz Barber and Lee Madden in the two heats before Paul Whiteman blew everyone away with a final win compounded with a last car win.

It was better than expected and probably the best BriSCA F1 meeting we have had at Arena Essex, with more cars showing up than we could have possibly imagined, which was excuse enough to throw in an extra heat at the start and up the meeting to two-thirds format. However if anyone thought that this would be a stroll for Frankie Wainman Jr., including Junior himself, this would not be the case. Certainly he took the second heat and the final, but it took a little time for Junior to remember his way around the circuit, locking up with Nick Smith and spinning into the centre field in the first heat. All was not lost for Smith either as he grabbed a heat win for himself and won the Grand National Qualifier too; all this on his home turf, and with Mo, his father, looking on too! Allan Hall was the other winner, making the best of the misfortune of Wainman and Smith in the first heat.

As for the Group A Hot Rods, it was a good day for the white tops, especially Ian Hefferman who took heat and final, along with Steve Goldsmith who pinned down a heat win of his own. Hefferman would have scored two heats but for a last minute win by Darren Clement in the last heat after a scuffle around back markers on the last lap.
