Rule 100 (PRI Rulebook, 2000) excerpt: If the caution starts after the "race finished" distance... ...has been reached then the race will be considered complete and the final placings will be those at the start of the last completed lap but excluding the driver who was the prime cause of the stoppage.
1300 Stock Cars
An important day for the 1300 Stock Cars on October 1 at
Arena Essex, starting with the Supreme Championship finals
with John McGirr defending the title from favourite Derry
Monk and newcomer Simon Welton. The opening action, however,
was between Welton and Derek Mortimer as Welton sliced inside
Monk from the start, then Mortimer sliced Welton away. Monk
soon recovered and left both behind, Mortimer bouncing on the
wall with Welton chasing. It would have stayed that way to
the end except that Darren Plumb would provide a spin that
turned into a sitting target, first for Darren Cardy, then in
a massive shot by Spedeworth visitor Neil Dunne and finally
and most tellingly by Welton. Welton had already been losing
places, eventually finishing fifth, while the most
interesting finish was by Steve Davis and Ricky Wolf, locked
together approaching the line! Davis would eventually free
himself to get fourth while Wolf spun away to recover in
ninth spot. The win, however, went predictably to Monk, with
season long adversary Andy Brown in second and McGirr only
able to get up to third. Brown and McGirr would gain a
measure of revenge in the helter-skelter race which made up
the meeting for the small saloon stocks this day when a more
orthodox start gave victory to Brown ahead of McGirr, McGirr
staying with Monk until the end when he leant inside Monk on
the last corner to secure second place.
PRI Banger Teams
PRI Banger Team final day at Arena Essex was October 1 this
year with the head to head final to be between the Kent
Condoms and the Essex Rabbits, while the other teams would
fight in more usual fashion to get the third place trophy won
last by the Rabbits in 1999. This is what started the
meeting, the first heat hotly contested by Shane Collins of
the Ant Hill Mob and Steve Ward of the Wrekin Krew, both
spinning out close to home gifting the first win to Cowboy
Garry Deacon. However the lions' share of the points went to
the Icelanders with Andy Crawford and Steve Shaw getting
second and third for the team with somewhat of an identity
problem, in that the team is known elsewhere as the Nuts! The
Squad bashing was still a visible feature of the meeting, the
Creams not having the Condoms or the Rabbits to join in with
them, but a number of the Unamed and a few others seemed
happy to join in, so when John Harris took a shot on the nose
from the recently returned Brian McGuiness, Wayne Rowland was
more than happy to complete the sandwich by shunting
McGuiness up the diff! RJK points leader Sonny Sherwood also
showed his wrecking side in the second heat when he jammed
his brakes after a pick up by Roger Trickett, Howard Martin
steaming in full chat to finish the Elite man. John Harding
also had a flaming good time after a hit by John Randall
caused his car to ignite, this after Randall had a go at
Harris who had popped up again for another go. Meanwhile
Glenn Seago was making up for the Ant Hill Mob's goof in the
first heat by clinching the win, though second spot Mark
Blackwell kept the Icelanders out in front. The Midnight
Runners had been a promising side in the qualifying heats
early in the year, easily qualifying for the playoffs but for
the second straight year had failed to score in that stage,
so it was a boost to the team when this years' most promising
Runner, Jason Jackson, took a win in heat three, most of the
leading teams shut out by the fact that most of their best
cars had qualified by this time. The race was also not
without its contact though, especially when Dean Kingsworth
boned Steve Witherington and fellow Runner Neal Wells was
crushed by a hit from Andy Ashman. The teams then took a
break while the Condoms and the Rabbits took centre stage.
The Condoms had history on their side, especially as the team were 1993 champions, although the team was very different from those days. The Rabbits were a relatively new side, not being in existance back then, but some of the team had derived from one of the last incarnations of the Essex Vermin, a dominant team in this Championship up to the early 1990's and also contained Tony Wade, a former World Champion and once a Condom himself. In fact it was Wade who made the first move, reversing off the start into Shane Davis before jetting off to radically nut Shanes' father Steve Davis while Shane copped a major diff rearrangement from Wayne Prayle, who would get one from Captain Condom before Mark Ruskin slammed John McLennan up the pit wall for a red flag so that the wounded Rabbit could be extracted. While the first section of the race seemed to be all going the way of the Rabbit, the restart would see a gradual reverse in fortunes. Wooster Smith would miss British Champion Andrew Davies but hit Ruskin in the process. All seemed well for the Rabbits, however, with Kevin Prayle doing the running until Ruskin delivered his final blow, taking himself and Prayle out in one last head on. The final gasp on both sides came from Kev Rust in the pink and Wooster Smith in the black, the pair in cars that could only just be said to be running when the 10 minute rule was invoked, Rust getting the decision on laps completed. The Condoms won, and while the Rabbits could be called unfortunate, they took the whole thing in good spirit, a big change from the scene at the last PRI Banger Team finals!
The consolation race saw a close win for Kev Hirse as he and Darren Stern battled around the last lap together, Sterns' contribution being part of a good haul that finally put the Ant Hill Mob into contention with the Icelanders while the Wrekin Krew got into double figures. A lot of jacking took place in this one, Harding up Stuart Adcock, Joe Warner up Andy Ashman, Andy Burrough up Ray Sharrod... yes, the Squad bashing was still there and the Creams were determined to keep the Squad out of the points again. They succeeded, and last years' Team Champions, the Suicide Squad, exit this years' competition with the dubious honour of having not scored a single point from any stage of the team championship! This race, however, also boasted possibly the biggest hit of the meeting when Darren Jones hit John Roofer head on, folding Roofers' car up against the turn four armco! Roofer emerged with no problems, but the car was carrier bag material. The team playoff final saw a lot more rodding, but it did see some wreckage, especially when Jackson decided to give Ian Smith a banana job on turn four to match Roofers' bag from the consolation. It also saw why the Ant Hill Mob are regarded as the dark horses of the team championships as they took a staggering thirty-six points and the 2000 Playoff title away courtesy of Shane Collins who managed to limp home first despite a last lap head on from Gringo Ashdown, while Paul Stern and Glenn Seago picked up third and fifth. Garry Deacon also managed to be part of a good return for the Cowboys in possibly their last team appearance, brother Mark and Mick Bradbury supplying the rest to shuffle the Canvey based team into second spot while a last gasp six points was all Chris Clark needed to put neighboring team Vange Destroyers in third spot. he Icelanders stalled after the second race, their tally only good enough to keep them in fourth while the Southend Menace get their best finish yet in fifth.
Glenn Seago celebrated his team win with another win in the non-team Rawlins Qualifier at the end in a race that turned nasty early on, only Ian knight going the distance with Seago, Mark Blackwell contenting himself by pulling out of the pile up just in time for the rest of the field to conk out for a bloodless last car finish.
