PRI Banger Teams
With the teams now pared down to the final eight, the 1999
Eliminator started at Arena Essex on August 1 with a three
car per team opener. Things looked promising for the Midnight
Runners, the last team into the eight, as Richard Day sped
away early, but Day would eventually lose his bearings after
Russ McAngus of the Squad led the attack for the yellow cars,
outpacing even his own teammates Brian McGuiness and newlywed
Kevin Wilsher, though all three managed points toward the
early Squad lead, the other eight teams having much of a
muddle of the rest of the points. Things heated up in the
second round as something of a battle started between the
Runners and previous title contenders, The Nads, which
culminated in a stoppage as John Drummond and Paul Jones
sandwiched Jason Jackson on the home straight, followed by a
monster jack off the shale for Drummond from non-Ford
specialist Mark Newman, all using the armco for bracing. Paul
Stern was also in trouble on the fence at the other end, so
out came the reds. Mark Want led away for the Dunno team but
was dumped four laps out by eventual winner Sean Collin who
was having a busy day of it, also racing 1300 Saloons that
day. The largest haul of points for that heat, however, went
the way of the Squad with McGuiness, Frankie Holmes and
McAngus running in second to fourth, while John Harding in
fifth added to Collin's points started to lift the Creams
ahead of the rest. The Squad eased off in the third heat as
Collin won again ahead of Team Dunno's Jay Wilders in a mixed
race with not much to note in it apart from a hard fencing
for Paul Eve by Dave Greenstreet. The final race might have
made a difference had it not been for the newest Squad
member, Stuart Adcock, leading Wilsher and McGuiness home for
a Squad whitewash, Frankie in fifth only making it worse with
only the Creams, Canvey Cowboys and a solitary Dunno, namely
Phil Hudson, grabbing anything at all.
Thus it was decided. The 1999 Team Championship Final would be yet another Squad vs. Cream showdown. All that was left was the Rawlins 2000 qualifier for which only Frankie came up for the Squad, and was promptly finished off by John Harris on the back straight, team hostilities finishing quickly. At that point, Mark Mahoney suddenly came in for several shots including a dooring from Neil Freeman, a head on from Dan Reid, finally finished off with a vicious sandwich attack by Bernie Reed and Wilders that bagged the Mahoney car and brought the reds out again. No one was backing off after the reds either as John Harding fired Terry Watkinson into the fence then met his end stopping Allan Trickett while Roger Trickett was stopped by the winner, Andy Burrough, though he was unable to survive the DD section. Trickett R was jacked out of contention by Phil Stevens while Harding tried Stuart Wilson before sniffing Trickett A's diff, leaving the final cat and mouse session to Wilson and Stevens which looked promising for Stevens as he picked Wilson up and wiped the armco down, but a final nut from Wilson left Stevens stranded, Wilson taking the hard route to the Rawlins Final.
1300 Saloon Stock Cars
With the newly inaugurated British Championship on the line
for the 1300 Saloons, the August 1 Arena Essex meeting was
well attended though it was quite obvious where the title
woud end up as the better prepared Spedeworth cars dominated
the day, though a few PRI drivers managed to make inroads
into the results early on, including Sean Collin who, not
satisfied with a double win for the Cream Team in the Banger
Team Eliminator running in the same meeting, picked up second
place in the first heat of the day behind Sam Holland. Collin
had been closing on Holland during the last few laps but not
quickly enough to better his trophy haul for the day. The
second heat was somewhat rougher with Richard Austin testing
the armco, becoming a cause for concern which brought the
reds out. Dean Osborne had been leading to that point and
rightly took his pole spot on the order restart, though his
restart looked a little suspect trackside. He managed to hang
on to the end despite the rapidly approaching Mark Smith,
Nigel Walker and Derry Monk cars, each flinging cars aside to
catch up. It was Smith who took the third heat over Steve
Jackson while Elliott Wainwright stirred the infield dirt in
a clash with Gordon Coull and Monk charged into Joe Mancini,
though Mancini survived to take fourth. That set the tone for
the Championship itself, which put Smith on pole though
outside pole Darren Goudy made some early running before
fading a little, finishing back in fourth. Holland finished
her day with Matt Baldwin and Steve Jackson in her side,
while Mark Bloss made a good early run, double spinning David
Perry and Paul Brand out before colliding with John McGirr
who was not having a good day himself. Smith took the title
ahead of Walker and Osborne as PRI scored a duck in the
British Championship final.
Lightning Rods
Just three races for the Lightning Rods in the August 1 Arena
Essex meeting which started with a few frayed tempers, a
loose spoiler for Darren Ahern being the start of a bad day
for him. Rob Carr knws all about damage, but this time he had
no problems hitting the outside line to grab the first heat
win from Richard Spavins. Steve Pitcher made up for his
excessive contact black in the first heat with a masterful
last lap win in the second heat, stopped midway as the dying
Paul Carle car stopped on the racing line at the exit to turn
two, Bryan Whiteman the unlucky person that was unable to
avoid the jacking that followed. Spavins took the main event
flag to flag as more than one car found things awkward on
turn one including Pitcher who collected Whiteman in the
mess.
