Hot Rods
The Hot Rods were out early at Arena Essex on April 18, Rick
Fray picking up a heat and final double and making it look
easy, though his efforts in the helter-skelter came to
nothing as he collided with Adam Scott in a bizarre twist
that saw an otherwise pedestrian last race change drastically
inside the final quarter of the race with all four front
runners crashing out, Andrew Armiger inheriting that win.
National Bangers
The second Double Point meeting at Arena Essex for the
Bangers, April 18, saw Phil Hudson notch up a heat and final
double. He grabbed the first heat off Jason Jackson with Ken
Knight getting through Jackson and Stuart Wilson to grab
second, Jackson holding Wilson off for third. Promising white
top Steve O'Sullivan took an easy win in the second heat
while some notable drivers were having problems, including
Chris Whiteman who repaid Craig Hewitt's jacking with a
fencing on the back straight but failed to score. Brother Den
took second with Bob Sterling behind him. O'Sullivan topped
his day off by finishing behind Hudson in the final with
Mildenhall Track Champion Sonny Sherwood rodding to third.
The Rawlins saw winner Jock Parker carried across the centre
to his doom by current World Champion John Harris, neither
surviving the destruction section of the event, that
distinction finally going to Knight as he outlasted Brian
McGuiness and Dave Greenstreet, though the best hit was
reserved for Bernie French who was well blasted from behind
by Dave Robinson on the pit bend.
BriSCA F2 Stock Cars
The trail to the World Championship shifted to Arena Essex
on April 18, and if some folk might be a little bored of Rob
Speak's name appearing as the winner of the races, few could
be bored of watching him get to the front. Speak had to fight
somewhat in the reasonably sized fields produced for this
outing which also included other notables as Mick Sworder and
Carl Issitt, both previously good on this circuit as well as
veteran Roy Goodman, and he was not to have the day all his
own way. The first heat was taken by Nic Grindrod as Duncan
Long first held Gary Ellis, then Chad Harris back from the
challenge in a curious tangle toward the end. The second heat
was all Speak once he had passed the early lead scrap,
notably Barry Parker and Chris Roots, Sworder following with
Darren Gowshall in tow. The consolation went to Neal Smith
who had ignominiously exited the first heat when Mark
Guinchard had sent him sailing into the Aveley bend armco.
Steve Green Jnr. and Snr. followed, the younger Green having
given up his earlier lead to Smith but not without a
struggle. Speak took the final ahead of Alan Bunter and
Sworder, though Bunter tried to leave a mark in Speak on the
way through, Sworder seemingly content to follow having been
spanked out of the way by Speak earlier in the race. The day
started going wrong for Speak, however, in the Grand National
qualifier when his one lap handicap started him too close to
the front of the white tops for comfort, the younger Steve
Green unable to resist tapping out the current World Champion
on the start. However, with Speak helpless, Paul English
steamed into him and promptly fell to bits, causing a stop.
All eyes watched the white tops on the restart and not
without cause as they took the green flag as permission to
send Speak toward the armco! The events after that saw Speak
try to get a measure of revenge on Green the Younger, thus
earning him the wrath of the steward, while Gowshall improved
on his earlier exploits by motoring in ahead of Sworder,
Grindrod following but soon to be docked for starting out of
position leaving Alan Canham with third place.
