Ministox
Arena Essex played host to the Ministox for the first time
this year on April 5, but no one was ready for what happened.
With over 40 cars in the pits, PRI decided to stage a
pre-meeting white top race and what we actually got was a 21
car start, something unprecedented in this formula's history
on this circuit. The previously unknown Lawrence Davey got a
good start and built on it, finishing half a lap ahead of
second place Tubbs Butler and Tom Meekings of RDC fame; quite
a few racers had travelled down from Incarace's stronghold in
the Midlands and RDC up in East Anglia. An experts race
followed later in the programme which was taken by local name
Ray Harris ahead of Michael Sanderson and Ryan Richards, with
the higher grades unable to get through. What was to have
been a second heat became a twenty-five lap final, another
first for the Mini's here. At this point, the curse of the
Mini's cut in, complicated by a 40 car start which meant that
the start needed three attempts and, when Ray Lawton got into
trouble at the Aveley end stopping the race, another two
attempts were needed to speed the survivors on their way.
This stoppage snatched the lead away from Butler as he was
one of the slowest away, allowing Joe Tandy Jr an easy line
through with Richard Grindrod and Alistair Pizzey following.
That was how it stayed to the end, though Grindrod did his
best to get ahead in the final laps. Brother Nick Tandy
picked up the Helter_Skelter at the end ahead of Harris and
Vic Bilkey Jr. after Brother Joe stuffed Scott Lock into the
home straight armco causing a stoppage and a declared result,
Joe's day finishing with a disqualification.
1300 Stock Cars
Sean Collin took time out from his busy schedule in the PRI
Banger Team bash on April 5 at Arena Essex to give his 1300
Stock Car a run. He took one win by nudging early leader
Roger Sugden out in the warm up then sprinting away, Andrew
Davies trailing in second after a hard scrap for that much.
Collin then picked the main event up too, adding it to his
Banger success, though the main event was stopped early as
Zeb Molyneux was first rolled on his side on turn four, Ricky
Wolf, Graham Moore and Martin Blowers ending up in the armco
trying to avoid, then Molyneux was hit onto his roof which
was more than enough for the steward. Derry Monk got back to
his winning ways in the Helter-Skelter, putting the bumper in
on Lynda Beaumont to grab the lead a few laps from home.
PRI Banger Teams
This years' PRI Banger Team championship started on April 5
at Arena Essex with an early win for the defending champions,
the Cream Team, courtesy of Sean Collin. Collin went on to
run a heat and final in the 1300 Saloons, but his solitary
eight points couldn't stop the Suicide Squad from grabbing
the lead with ex-World Chmapions Kev Wilsher and Chris
Whiteman notching twelve up between them. Russ McAngus
improved on that with a win in the second heat, though new
team Midnight Runners managed to draw the most off this heat
with Bernie Reid and Nick Marsh grabbing ten points to put
them third behind previous winners Ant Hill Mob. The first
two heats were heavy on action, but the third heat was the
one that produced the controversy when Mark Ruskin, lone
member of the Cockney Pride team, followed Dave Greenstreet
of the Creams in hard on turn three. That earned him a load
up and brought out the well worn topic of the follow in rule
for discussion around the track. The race went the way of Den
Whiteman after the restart, with Buster Woods following,
giving a maximum haul to the Squad and stretching their lead.
Mark Jones popped Stuart Allen over on the pit bend in the
consolation for a restart which went to the team with no
known name, Phil Hudson winning for the Dunno's with Jay
Wilders contributing in fourth. However only three teams
scored in the heavy hitting final, the majority going to the
Squad in a fifty-four point haul including the Whiteman twins
and Kev Wilsher in the first three. The Suicide Squad later
announced that their winnings were being donated to the
provision of a childrens' party later in the season. Chris
Whiteman won the Rawlins, stalled early when Stuart Wilson
was rolled on his roof, while the destruction section saw a
final showdown between Whiteman and John Harding awarded to
Harding when the pair killed each other in a home straight
showdown.
