Lightning Rods
Arena Essex was treated to some good, solid racing by the Lightning Rods in their first meeting of the year on March 28 with newcomer Micky Molyneux taking the final as well as the second heat after some great racing from the white tops. The meeting was not without drama, however, as Peter Waite lost control on the home straight just after receiving a black flag for contact, then Rob Carr sped straight into the fenced Waite car, bringing the reds out in that final for what would be the third and final time. Other good performances were notched up for the curious suspension job of Paul Harris who took the first heat and Banger ace Don Anderson who took the third heat.

1300 Stock Cars
The 1300 Saloons started the season at PRI Arena Essex with a domestic run on March 28 and while Mitchell Terry celebrated his return after a lengthy ban with a heat win, the final was a runaway victory for Banger big hitter Sean Collin with sole Lady driver Lynda Beaumont cuddling the silver in the allcomers' race at the end. While Derry Monk and Andrew Palmer might have dominated the end of the previous season, it was obvious that the other folk had done some serious work in the off season to catch up, not to mention the amount of hits awarded to the refugees throughout the meeting including a big five way smash on the home straight which saw Steve and Andrew Davies, Spike Ellis and Del Mortimer smash hard into the wall and into Mark Browne, who staggered off from that final while the others continued.

National Bangers
PRI this year introduced the "Double Points" meeting at Arena Essex to replace the old World Qualifiers as part of the BBA shakeup. It means that all points count towards the ten places reserved for PRI drivers in the ORCi World Final in September, and these meetings will allow drivers to amass points towards the final places. It's hoped that this will allow for better competition in the Final itself and encourage more participation throughout the year.
The first Double Points meeting at Arena Essex was March 28 and all glory to Chris Whiteman who took his first final of the year and a stonking 32 points as Sean Collin ended up second after losing the lead to go chew butts. Collin took first honours in heat one before adding a 1300 Stock Car win later that afternoon. No one was quite sure why Shane Davies hit the rear of the stationary Mick Holmes estate on turn two but the effect was a load up for Davies. Since the Frankie-mobile re-emerged later on in the day, one could assume that the move was probably pointless, but Davies probably had his reasons. John Randall took the second ahead of Phil Hudson with Jason "Boxer Jack" Jackson doing the consolation in a meeting surprisingly free of major hits. Randall got his second win in the Rawlins 2000 while Dave Greenstreet polished Hudson off to take last car running.
