"Mini Madness" Meeting - Metro/Mini Bangers & Ministox

On a hot night in July, all assembled for the small car event of RDC's year and if there was some doubt about numbers given the inordinate number of these Metro events being raced by promotions around the country, the fifty-plus field that showed up was quite ample for a good days' racing. Perhaps the affront of the Metro to the genius of Issigonis is slowly being erased, although it was quite clear where the advantage lay in the speed and wrecking stakes.

The Ministox had quite a fraught night of it, Simon Welton (6) lucking out when he hit a post on the home straight avoiding a spinner rejoining, the damage not stopping him picking up a heat and final as while Ian Reddin (4) who was about the fastest that night took the other heat having spanked the opposition out of the way. His third place behind Michael Sanderson (350) in the final perhaps reflected his preoccupation with hitting, though the biggest hitter in the final at least had to be Carley Barnett (51) who had been seriously manhandled in an early heat incident and was getting a measure of revenge!

The Metro Banger heats were fairly roddy, Dave Callow (488) winning the Novice Qualifier, Chris Outhwaite (344) and Dave Armstrong (54) in the heats, though Armstrongs' win was at the expense of a massive jacking on turn one for (050) which stopped that race which had already been restarted after Steve Pyle (198) took a shot in the side. The consi's were as heavy as ever, split into two as they were, with Wayne Brown (314) surviving a back staight pile up in the first one and Carl Turnbull (619) surviving the second. The final, however, went the way of American first timer Scott Lique (693) who was awarded the win after the biggest hit of the meeting was redded close to home as Vince Wolf (8) was pinned to the front of (318) only to have Davey Cox (119) plant Dave Callow up his bum, folding the Wolf mini. Andy Davies (147) was left to mop up in the Accumulator Qualifier, hopeful runner Martin Brinkworth (2) being stopped halfway with Joe Mullarky (19) being the last car in the way, finally clattered to death by a series of nuttings from Mr. Mess on the home straight.
