The first meeting of the year for the Ministox at Arena Essex, March 25, saw an attempt at domination by the Hulls, both elder Rob and younger Billy, as they took a heat each. Rob took the first heat of the day, passing Micky Galloway two laps from home with Liam Friel in tow, while Rob held off Danny Morrow and Jack Wheelwright in the second as Billy took his first trophy. The third heat, however, failed to go the distance as Jack Bunning ended up the wrong way around on turn two. Danny Morrow was given the result, being comfortably ahead by the time the red flag came out. The younger Galloway sprinted off the line in the final, building up a big lead that Jamie Lee Potter and Jack Wheelwright tried in vain to break down, although they were close enough to worry Micky Galloway by the end and would possibly have taken the lead had the race been just a little longer.

Lightning Rods
Arena Essex, March 25, and the first Lightning Rods of the season passed off well with many drivers hoping to be in the running for some of the events later in the year including the World Championship at the end of September. It was a slow start for Lee Morrow but, taking position on the second row outside in the final, he managed to get around Brian Thomas and Vic Bilkey on the front row and cruise away to victory while Bilkey held off Terry Shelvey and a late run by Dale Atkins but got no further than second spot. Thomas and Bilkey had got to the front row courtesy of a heat win each; Thomas had easily cruised home in the first heat after passing Brian Smith near the start while Dave Imber had to battle Bilkey for second spot. Imber would later win the second heat from the front, again battling Bilkey all the way but winning out on each occasion, while Bilkey would take the third heat while Thomas took second spot from Smith two laps out.
