Group A Hot Rods
This years' Dean Kemp Memorial winner was Lee Ayton, who won
the title at Arena Essex during their May 29 meeting in fine
style, first holding off a determined challenge from Chris
Goldsmith then from Gary Rouse, controlling the racing line
on a day that saw plenty of action around the circuit. Jason
Griffiths took the first win of the day in a tight race that
saw him snatch the victory from long time leader Trevor
Gillman, whilst Chris Smith finished ahead of a dead heat for
fourth, Clinton Groom and Steve Gooch having battled through
much of the race. Dave Lamb took the second heat, much to the
delight of his fan club trackside, in a battle from the back
that saw him grab victory from Goldsmith who would later come
out and take the third and final heat, again denying Gillman
a trophy.
Outlaw Hot Rods
The May 29 Outlaw Hot Rod meeting suffered a little at the
hands of the weather in its final, though the heats that led
up to it were certainly worth watching as Steve Collison took
victory ahead of a battle that saw ex-Group A man Tony Moss
come home ahead of Chris Wood and Stu Hammond. Hammond would
drive even better in the reverse grid race, leading Wayne
Souter home in another epic struggle that saw these two and
the following Moss and Warren Farazmand break away from the
pack. Moss held Hammond at bay in the final, though
conditions had started to deteriorate by this time.
Mk.III Granada Bangers
Lee Madden won heat and final at Arena Essex on May 29 in
the Mk.III Granada Banger meeting, holding off Chris
Worthington on both occasions, and got third in the Rawlins
qualifier on that day, the win going to Paul Hunter who had
doubled at the previous running of this event at the start of
May. Gary Greenland took the egg cup for the last car
running.
