National Bangers Brian Orgles Memorial
Group A Hot Rods Groom Motorsport Millennium 50 |
|
| In Brief |
It was a big day for everyone at Arena Essex on August 11 as the Bangers turned out in droves for the annual Brian Orgles Memorial meeting, and the Group A Hot Rods did likewise for the Groom Motorsport Millennium 50 marathon meeting.
Lee Madden became the winner of the twenty-fourth running of the Brian Orgles Memorial for the National Bangers in what became a high contact meeting, mostly at the behest of the ongoing team blitz between outgoing team champions, the Midnight Runners, and former champions Cream Team. Charlie Shanahan took the first heat while a surprise entry, ex-Squad member Roger Trickett, took the second heat. Den Catmore was the third heat winner with Dave Brown getting the consolation. The Rawlins 2000 qualifier almost turned into a Destruction Derby straight off, with only two cars staying the distance with a number of hits being turned in. Chris Trickett kept the family name flying with a win here, while second place Tubbs Butler secured last car.
The third running of the Groom Motorsport Millennium 50 saw both old and new talent on display. The new talent had to be Chris Smith in his first outing in the Group A formula following his success in the Ministox. Smith was only betrayed by mechanical problems which stopped him from winning the first heat and also forced him out of the helter skelter race, but got him a convincing victory in the consolation race before he took on the gruelling fifty lap final and almost won it. His victory was denied by Gary Rouse, who shot through the field to challenge and take the lead with only a few laps to spare. Heat wins went to Pete Read and Chris Fuller, while inaugural winner Steve Mills took third place in the final before winning the helter skelter race.
