Ladies Bangers
The third Ladies Banger round at Arena Essex on June 11 went
to Ashlie Clift in a win that saw her take the lead early on
only to see the successive leaders including T J Stern fall
to various fates, Ashlie taking back the lead late on and
hold that place to the end, Sharon Worthington finishing
second from Stern.
Plastengrave Bangers
The Plastengrave Non-Ford Banger Championship came around
again at Arena Essex on June 11 with the return of a familiar
face on the winners' lap of honour in heat one as former
title holder Dale Street, a rare racer nowadays, showed that
he could still coax a car home even after hitting wreckage
close to home which could so easily have cost him the race.
He was, however, upstaged somewhat by a 1959 Standard Pennant
which, at the hands of Paul Jones, took on allcomers around
the pit bend after vaulting a sleeper, leaving sizeable dents
in Mark Christmas, Steve Wilks and Stuart Letton before
finally bailing out with honours! It was the Christmas car
that Street hit inside the final lap, giving Dave Robinson
the incentive, if not the chance, to close and pass the
stricken leader before the chequered flag. Heat two went the
way of a flag to flag victory for Paul Hawkes. Starting on
the front as is his wont, he jetted away, leaving the rest of
the field to squabble over the other places, though Curtis
Major did get a chunk of him on the way. Sonny Sherwood added
to his lead position in the Drivers Championship in the third
heat, nudging Chris Hussey out of the way three laps from
home with Stuart Ruff in tow, Hussey even more unlucky to
lose third to Kev Harland on the back straight of the last
lap, Harland driving easily the smallest car of the day!
While the consolation was won by Andy Crawford, the race was
all about Elliot Dobson who provoked the early pile up, then
turned on Dave Edwards and Ken Merton before engaging in a
bloody battle with Clinton Scorah, each bashing the other to
a standstill on the pit bend. The final saw Ruff get one back
on Sherwood as he reversed the heat three result, winning by
a wide margin while Sherwood, starting further back, had to
battle with Craig Polley and Paul Eve to get his eventual
second spot. Hawkes was taken out courtesy of a head on from
Mark Bunting while Street didn't make a mark though another
former title holder, Mark Newman, did hold second for a while
until taken out by Crawford. Tony McDonald took the winners
and last car running awards together in the Rawlins
qualifier, first jetting home as previous leader Mark Day
took a wrong turn in the trash, then freed Days' wheels up in
the DD ending only to see Day and John Harris crash and stall
together, leaving McDonald running alone.
