Ministox
With the number of cars increasing, the Ministox were split up differently for the April 30 Arena Essex meeting with everyone getting two of three qualifying rounds. The whie and yellow tops started off first, with a flag to flag win for Rikki Taylor ahead of Nick Brown and Steven Willis in the rain and after a stalled start when Ben Deakin spun on turn one. The yellows then got a turn with the experts, with recent TV "star" Lawrence Davey scrambling through to win, Danny Sanderson following hard with an excellent drive by Vic Bilkey, the youngest red top ever, to get to third. The last heat saw the white tops face up to the experts, the finish coming down to a last corner dash between Fred Pattinson and Tubbs Butler, Butler getting home first by inches to be knocked back to second for contact during the dash, Darren Cardy following the pair in third. The final was again stalled by a spinner, this time John Coveney, as the track continued to be a problem in the wet. Daniel Amos led early but after one third place, Cardy was not going to be denied a win and having come up through the field, two laps out, he dummied Amos wide then dived inside to get the lead, Jimmy Randall following to second spot. That is how it finished.

PRI Hot Rods
The Bill Chelton Memorial Trophy this year, April 30 at Arena Essex, went to Tony Allard who made a return to the formula in the ex-Lyons Mazda conversion, dominating the meeting from the start with a heat win prior to the final before passing Alan White midway in the final, Julian Scott and Paul Simmons following at a distance in the wet. With the track beginning to dry out, Neil Reeves managed to yank a big lead out to win the sprint finish from Roy Rawlins and Gary Andrews.

National Bangers
April 30 was the first all Rising Stars meeting at Arena Essex this year with the number of meetings overall decreased in favour of single races opening National Banger meetings. A smaller than usual turnout meant a change to the programme with an all in final topping off the two heats. Stephen Lee took the lead at around halfway in the first heat and finished that way with Billy Lee and Neal Wells getting the other two places into the end of season final, though the lead did briefly swap close to home when Wells managed to get in front only to go too wide on the corners and drop back. Ian Smith finished up first in the second heat in a race dominated by Paul Hawkes, Rob Kitchener and Dale Street, the lead switching between them until Lee Caunter stuck Kitchener into a pile up, the general effect allowing Smith through in front of Street and Hawkes. Kitchener was not content with this and came out in the final and though Mel Isaacs gave him a few problems, Kitchener won by two clear laps over Smith and Ricky Sherwood. Smith also picked up the Rawlins qualifier over Billy Lee and Ian Leech before a wrecking session which saw Mark Jones and Leech going at it before a final big head on finished them both off, both being given Last Car awards.
